WHEN HOPE CALLS Star Updates Fans on Show’s Future

Fans have eagerly awaited news of WHEN HOPE CALLS season two since the initial season premiered in 2019, but actress Morgan Kohan shared that the next chapter may never come.

“It’s a show that keeps popping up by to say ‘Hi,’ but you never know,” Kohan told HELLO. “I think it’s a really beautiful world, and I’m so happy for my time in it. I think maybe, at a point, I would [return to the show] but I’m really excited with where my career is taking me now.”

“I was really, really special but I feel like a different person now from when I was filming that show,” she added, explaining that even if the show does return, she likely won’t be part of it.

WHEN HOPE CALLS follows the story of two orphaned sisters who were separated as children but reunited as adults. Fans were first introduced to Kohan’s character, Lillian, and her sister Grace (Jocelyn Hudon) during a 2018 WHEN CALLS THE HEART Christmas special – WHEN CALLS THE HEART: THE GREATEST CHRISTMAS BLESSING.

Along with the inaugural season of the show, WHEN HOPE CALLS has been revisited with a two-part Christmas special that continues the storylines wrapped up in season one. However, Kohan’s costar and on-screen sister, Jocelyn Hudson, did not return for the special, suggesting that even in 2021, the likelihood of a second season was starting to look grim.

While Great American Family initially greenlit a second season, there haven’t been any updates about the show’s future since 2021.

Kohan’s future on WHEN HOPE CALLS is uncertain right now, but her fans can catch her on the CW’s SULLIVAN’S CROSSING.

“The world right now is hard and these kinds of shows let you sit down for an hour, go on a journey with these characters that you learn to love, and you enjoy your time and get taken out of whatever else is going on in your world,” Kohan said about uplifting shows life SULLIVAN’S CROSSING and WHEN HOPE CALLS.

“There’s nothing too crazy or dark here; you’re going to leave that hour feeling good and a lot of the time, for me anyway, it makes me want to call my own family and friends, and bring my community closer together which I think is a beautiful thing,” she added, speaking about SULLIVAN’S CROSSING specifically.

Fans of the endearing and faith-filled WHEN HOPE CALLS are still waiting to learn when the series will return with the full second season. The “Hopefuls” were treated with a two-part Christmas special in December 2021, but showrunners have yet to announce when more episodes will air.

When it does return, viewers will not find it on Hallmark. In another move that adds to the shake-up at Crown Media, the spinoff of WHEN CALLS THE HEART will instead premiere on the new GAC Family. The network, which was known as Great American Country, was acquired by Bill Abbott, former President and CEO of Crown Media Family Networks, the parent company of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

The network rebranded and became available on September 27, 2021. It has since been building its own programming powerhouse after signing several Hallmark stars to exclusive production deals. Jen Lilly is their most recent, following Trevor Donovan and Danica McKellar. Actress Lori Loughlin makes her return to television in WHEN HOPE CALLS as Abigail Stanton, a character she portrayed for five seasons on WHEN CALLS THE HEART.
