Why Fans Love THE CHOSEN

Executive producer Darrel Eves, who has spearheaded much of the marketing for THE CHOSEN, explained how the show sets itself apart from other Christian media, something he believes has been a major factor in its mainstream success.

“When Dallas shared his vision for [THE CHOSEN], he shared that it was about Jesus Christ but it was through the eyes of those that He called,” Eves told the Crossmap Podcast. “Like you see their perspective and this is where it’s fresh, you know, because I can’t personally relate to Jesus Christ; He is God, I am nothing, you know, but I sure can relate to Peter or I can with Matthew or I can with Mary.”

“And I can relate with their struggles because I have struggles, I have problems, I have issues, and it’s those small little moments of the humanity intertwined with the struggle and seeing God’s grace. That’s where I think the show’s just amazing because you’re able to see that transformation when they get to know Him and when they give their heart to Him, which is beautiful,” Eves continued.

Eves has seen the impact this unique approach has firsthand, not only from his own perspective but with his kids as well.

“Our 15-year-old at the time, when he watched the show, he was just so touched, he goes, ‘Dad, I always just viewed Jesus as stoic and just distant and cold and He would come down hard on me if I sinned. But he’s just the opposite. He’s my friend. He’s one that’s gonna lift me up when I’m down,’” Eves told Movieguide®. “As we’re teaching, and as they have this misconception of who Jesus is, we get to see an authentic Jesus of how he interacts with the one. He’ll leave the 99 go to the one. And I think we hear that, but I don’t think we understand what that means.”

“For me as a father, all the energy, money and pain that we’ve done to get THE CHOSEN up, that moment, that’s it, that’s it for me, like, if that’s all THE CHOSEN did for me, that’s all I needed,” he added. “But to see it to impact lives, we get 10s and 1,000s of stories of people being impacted in one way or another from the content or they really connect with a character and they see themselves and they see Jesus differently. And that’s really refreshing.”

That new perspective on Jesus is exactly what Eves wants all audiences to experience. From the start, he knew that the show’s unique approach would speak to both Christians and non-Christians alike and help them better understand God’s heart. His background before joining the show allowed him to get as many eyes as possible on THE CHOSEN.

“For me, I just wanted to take my love for Jesus and let the world see an authentic Jesus, and so that led to everything that I did in marketing and advertising and owning my own agency and owning multiple businesses, and it all helped really give us the foundation we needed…to let Dallas do what he was meant to do, which is create this amazing piece of content that then I could actually help, you know, get social chatter and get audiences to care about it,” Eves explained. “Because we found that the content will speak for itself, but we just really need to get people to talk about it, and that’s where I really felt like my career and everything kind of led up to this moment of really getting a billion people to see the show.”

Going into Season 5, Eves believes the impact of THE CHOSEN will only grow larger as the cast tackles some of the best-known stories as Jesus walks through the final week of his life.

Movieguide® previously reported:

Dallas Jenkins is dishing out some exclusive details about the upcoming season of THE CHOSEN.

“In Season 5, we were able to film some of the big events of Holy Week. You’ve got the Turning of the Tables in the temple, you’ve got the Triumphal Entry, you’ve got the Last Supper, these are all things that are not spoilers. They’re in the there in the Gospels,” Jenkins told Movieguide®.

He explained how this season will show a side of Jesus that his followers and disciples were surprised by.

“What’s cool, what I’m really excited about is not just the portrayal of those moments but what would it have been like to be there? What would the disciples have thought when they watch their Rabbi who has the opportunity to unite the people… — because at the beginning of the week, they’re all singing his praises literally and this is a chance to unite the people and potentially do what they’ve expected the Messiah to do forever, which is overthrow their oppressors — what would you do when within a couple days, He not only doesn’t do that, he does the opposite?”

THE CHOSEN recently held ChosenCon where several new projects were announced.

These projects include an eight-episode miniseries called THE CHOSEN: JOSEPH, THE CHOSEN: BOOK OF MOSES, THE CHOSEN IN THE WILD WITH BEAR GRYLLS and a 14-episode animated spinoff called THE CHOSEN ADVENTURES.
