Why This Cheerleader is Amazed By God’s Plan for Her Life

By Movieguide® Contributor

Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Reese Weaver discussed her faith and explained why she is thankful for the opportunity to share the behind-the-scenes of this role.

Weaver is a second-year cheerleader in the NFL. She recently became a public figure with the release of the new Netflix show AMERICA’S SWEETHEARTS which follows the team through one year of performances. Weaver was one of the main people the show followed, and her strong faith was greatly highlighted.

“Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that this was in the Lord’s plan,” Weaver told the “Unplanned” podcast. “Obviously He does exceed and gives far abundantly than we could ever ask. And so I just never knew this was like His plan for my life.”

“I never thought this would happen, and I never dreamt of it happening because, at the end of the day, all I wanted to be was a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader,” she added.

While the girls in Weaver’s role are often looked up to and even idolized, she is thankful for the opportunity to share the reality of being a cheerleader and show both the positives and the negatives of the position.

“I think the world is kind of tired of seeing picture perfectness because it’s not like that in real life, and so I hope that in everything that we do and everything that we say, any interaction that we show, like, ‘hey, we’re relatable,’ like, ‘we’re just as broken, just as confused and messy as, you know, any other person is,’” Weaver said.

“So I think that the show highlights that we’re daughters, like, we’re sisters, we’re friends, like, we are women who have dreamt big but also have so much more going on behind the scenes, and I think that the show really shows and highlights that, because when you put that uniform on, there are a lot of eyes and little girls looking at you with stars, and it’s like, oh no, the stars are actually in my eyes,” she continued. “Because what I can do is, you know — it’s just such a mutual thing of being able to give back in a way but also become relatable in a sense of like, hey, if I can do this, like, you can do this.”

Weaver has spoken about her faith in the past, saying that she’s “Dancing for an audience of One” in her Instagram bio.

“I pray that whoever watches this one day sees (God) and not me,” she told producers, per Deseret News.

Weaver’s humility and desire to be real is a large reason why Netflix chose her to be one of the main stars of the show, giving audiences someone relatable and likable to root for. It’s amazing to see how she is handling this newfound fame and using her platform to spread the Gospel rather than focus on herself.

Movieguide® previously reported on another Cowboys cheerleader:

Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and AMERICA’S SWEETHEARTS star Claire Wolford says being part of the iconic cheer team has made her faith “so much stronger.”

“I never thought [cheerleading] was something I wanted to do,” she explained in an episode of the “Happy and Healthy” podcast. “The sports-entertainment world was not even on my mind.”

Wolford was more interested in commercial dancing and planned to move to New York or Los Angeles. However, as her college graduation got closer, she started to rethink things.

“One day I feel like I just had a heart change on it, and I was like, ‘Okay, you need to do something that’s going to impact other people, too…you’ve been given this gift, but how are you going to use it to serve God and others?’” she said…

She also shared that being a part of the Dallas Cowboys cheer team has strengthened her faith.

“It’s made my faith so much stronger,” Wolford said. “We do have Bible studies that we’ve had since I was on the team, and I’ve had so many mentors and girls who have just led me in my faith, and I hope to do the same for other girls.”
