Wolverine Cries Out to God in this 90’s Animated X-MEN Episode

Before Hugh Jackman introduced the Marvel title character Wolverine in movies, the 1990’s cartoon X-MEN on Fox Kids stole the hearts of many Saturday morning audiences across the country. What many may not know is that at one point in one episode, Wolverine cried out to accept God in prayer.

In the episode that takes place at a monastery in Germany, Wolverine, Gambit and Rogue interact with Nightcrawler a deeply religious mutant who the townspeople have mistaken for a demon. In the episode, Nightcrawler discusses the nature of good and evil with Wolverine, while also stressing the importance of faith in Jesus Christ and gratefulness.

The monk comments, “All people struggle with the capacity for sin.” He continues in his mini-monologue stating that his heart matters more than his outward appearance. Could he perhaps be referencing 1 Samuel 16:7? “But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.’”

It appears so.

“God does not give up on His children – human or mutant,” Nightcrawler urges. What an awesome representation of God’s truth! Nightcrawler recognizes Wolverine’s defeated attitude and encourages him to “take comfort in the fact that His love is limitless.”

At the end of the exchange between Nightcrawler and Wolverine, the Nightcrawler hands Wolverine a copy of the Bible. As if the episode couldn’t get any better… the last ten seconds of the clip show Wolverine on his needs at the altar in a church before the Cross reciting a passage of scripture.
