CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Quality:
****
Content:
+2 Moderately questionable elements.
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is a wondrously quirky and heartwarming adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book about poor Charlie Bucket’s fantastic, life-changing visit to Willy Wonka’s amazing candy factory. The movie imparts many positive moral messages, not the least of which is the fact that having a loving family is the best reward of all.

JULIE & JULIA

Quality:
****
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
JULIE & JULIA is a savory cinematic dish about a young woman who is inspired by famous American cook and TV pioneer Julia Child to spend one year cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s book on French cuisine and writing a blog about it. The movie deftly goes back and forth between the woman’s experience and Julia Child’s early career, but it contains some foul language, some light sexual references and some brief politically correct content.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

Quality:
****
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
RETURN OF THE KING, the final chapter of LORD OF THE RINGS, tells what further trials Frodo, Sam, and their friends must face in order to defeat the demonic forces led by Sauron. RETURN OF THE KING is one of the great movie masterpieces that weaves many biblical principles and allegorical Christian metaphors into a magnificent story, but it is too scary and intense for younger children.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS

Quality:
****
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS, part two of Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, chronicles the continuing saga of the Hobbit Frodo and his friends, who battle satanic forces that want to ravage all of Middle Earth. THE TWO TOWERS is a highly moral tale of good fighting evil that is spoiled by some New Age elements and strong battle violence.

THE QUEEN

THE QUEEN is an illuminating, fascinating glimpse into the rarified world of the British royalty that tells what happens when Britain learns of the tragic sudden death of Princess Diana in a car accident. With a very strong moral worldview with very strong references to God, THE QUEEN is a rare movie that works on all levels and is fascinating to watch.

Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
THE POLAR EXPRESS is a fun-tastic holiday adventure for the whole family about a boy who travels on a magical train to the North Pole. THE POLAR EXPRESS lacks any references to Jesus Christ, the real reason for the Christmas season, but it is superbly done and contains positive moral lessons for children of all ages.

SPY KIDS 2: THE ISLAND OF LOST DREAMS

****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
SPY KIDS 2 features the Cortez children trying to retrieve a powerful device on a mysterious island, where they encounter a genetic scientist, a set of rival spy kids and some mutated monsters. Robert Rodriguez has once again created a fun, clean movie that promotes love, self-sacrifice and family, but younger children may be scared by the monsters.

FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY

Quality:
****
Content:
-2 Extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.
FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY is the often comical story of the WWE pro-wrestling league’s first female superstar wrestler, and how she and her family struggled yet held together in loving support during her arduous rise to fame. FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY has a strong moral worldview that’s pro-family and that extols hard work, but it’s marred by foul language and crude comments, as well as very frequent over-the-top (but not bloody or graphic) wrestling style violence.

Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
THE LION KING returns to the big screen in a live-action remake of the popular 1994 cartoon, as Simba the lion has to learn to grow up and save the ones he loves. THE LION KING is well made and has a strong moral, redemptive worldview extolling sacrifice and acting honorably, but it does have some pagan mysticism and scary scenes of lions fighting each other that merit caution for younger children.

ALADDIN is a spirited live action remake of Disney’s classic 1992 cartoon with Will Smith playing the role of the blue genie, who helps a kindhearted Arab street urchin win the heart and hand of a beautiful princess.
