What You Need To Know:
BUGONIA is well made and acted. However, it’s too bizarre, violent and obscenity laced. Also, the movie turns out to be an abhorrent, mindless piece of humanist, environmentalist, anti-capitalist propaganda. The resolution of the conflict between the conspiracy theorist and the female CEO seems contradictory. BUGONIA has four ultraviolent scenes, nearly 50 strong obscenities and two strong profanities.

More Detail:
BUGONIA is another weird science fiction thriller, this time with a horror twist, from Greek immigrant Yorgos Lanthimos, who tells a story about two cousins who kidnap a CEO because the elder cousin believes she’s part of a conspiracy by an alien race controlling human beings to commit total genocide. BUGONIA is bizarre, ultraviolent and obscenity laced and turns out to be an abhorrent, mindless piece of humanist, environmentalist, anti-capitalist propaganda.
The movie begins by introducing the two cousins and the CEO. Terry is a conspiracy nut leading his shy, simple-minded younger cousin, Don, in a plan to kidnap Michelle, the female CEO of a drug company. Terry is sure that Michelle is a member of an alien race controlling humanity and planning to wipe out all the humans on the planet. Meanwhile, Michelle lays down some new company guidelines for her employees. She talks about diversity and a flexible hours program, but it’s clear she’s not committed to either.
Terry and Don kidnap Michelle and chain her in the basement. There, Terry interrogates her, demanding she admit she’s an alien. When she denies Terry’s accusations, Terry resorts to horrific electrical shocks. His cousin’s torture of Michelle disturbs Don’s gentle soul. Terry only relents when he realizes Michelle is part of the aliens’ royal family. So, he brings her upstairs for dinner, for peaceful negotiations.
A series of crazy twists ensues.
BUGONIA is well made and acted. However, it’s too bizarre, violent and obscenity laced. Also, the movie turns out to be a Marxist, humanist allegory against rich people, billionaires and corporate leaders. As such, it’s an abhorrent, mindless, shallow piece of humanist, environmentalist, anti-capitalist propaganda. The resolution of the conflict between the conspiracy theorist and the female corporate leader doesn’t really make sense. Their final actions seem self-contradictory. BUGONIA also has four ultraviolent scenes, nearly 50 strong obscenities and two strong profanities.
