EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!

What You Need To Know:

EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! follows three days in the life of Jake, who’s come to Southeast Texas University from California in the hopes of taking another step toward a major-league pitching career. Jake is instantly enmeshed in the camaraderie of his eccentric college baseball teammates. All the guys are eager to violate their coach’s orders to avoid drinking alcohol in the house or taking women to the upstairs bedrooms. Over the long weekend, they hit a bar, disco and honkytonk while pursuing drunken escapades and loose women. Meanwhile, there are rivalries and burgeoning friendships among the guys.

There’s not much of an actual plot, as the movie tries to immerse viewers in the ramshackle way these athletes live. Nearly everyone looks too old for their parts. That said, the movie is sometimes engaging and hilarious. In fact, it works pretty well for what it’s trying to achieve, even if it sometimes seems shapeless and unfocused. EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! tries to create an articulate, funny indie spirit, but it has an extremely pagan, immoral, ultimately abhorrent worldview with abundant foul language and other offensive content.

Content:

(PaPaPa, Ro, B, LLL, V, SSS, NN, AAA, DDD, MM) Very strong pagan, immoral worldview extolling fornication and partying, although the central character takes some interest in a respectful, genuine relationship with a woman and at least tries to achieve that; at least 190 obscenities (including at least 150 “s” words) and 10 profanities; violence is mild, with one comical bar fight involving a pileup of college baseball team members versus bar employees that isn’t graphic and ends quickly; very strong sexual content includes much crude dialogue about sexual activities intended for comedy, some partially depicted fornication, lots of implied fornication, sexual promiscuity, the college-age men try to sleep with as many women as possible, nude women are groped; images of upper and rear female nudity plus some upper and rear male nudity; alcohol is consumed throughout the movie, often to drunken excess; no smoking but promotion of marijuana use, naked man talks to himself while clearly being high on marijuana, marijuana is discussed and used throughout, and one extensive scene shows some of the guys smoking out of a marijuana device or “bong”; and, strong miscellaneous immorality includes a complete disregard for the rules imposed by city authorities who own the houses where the guys live, and the guys pull mean-spirited pranks on each other (including one scene where freshman players are duct taped to an outfield wall while baseballs are hit at them by older teammates).

More Detail:

EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! follows the members of a Texas college baseball team during the final three days of summer in 1980 as they search for sex, booze and marijuana amid an outrageous string of parties. EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! tries to have an articulate, funny indie spirit, but, in fact, it has an extremely pagan, immoral worldview.

The movie is billed as a “spiritual sequel” to Writer/Director Richard Linklater’s cult movie DAZED AND CONFUSED, which followed 24 hours in the lives of teenagers in mid-‘70s small-town Texas as they prepared for and engaged in a massive party. The new movie follows three days in the life of a guy named Jake (Blake Jenner), who’s come to Southeast Texas University from California in the hopes of taking another step toward a major-league pitching career.

Jake is instantly enmeshed in the camaraderie of his eccentric teammates. All of the guys are eager to violate their coach’s orders to avoid drinking alcohol in the house or taking women to the upstairs bedrooms. Over the course of the long weekend, they hit a bar, a disco and a honkytonk while pursuing drunken escapades and loose women. Meanwhile, there are brewing rivalries and burgeoning friendships among the guys.

There’s not much in the way of an actual plot here, as the movie tries to immerse viewers in the ramshackle way these guys live their lives. Linklater has an eye for talent, as DAZED AND CONFUSED gave some of the first screen appearances to stars like Ben Affleck, but in this movie, nearly every one of the ostensibly college-aged players looks 10 to 15 years too old for their parts. This is an unnecessary distraction at many points of the movie, but the performers definitely feel like real people rather than false creations, and that will help draw in viewers.

Thus, moviegoers wind up with a movie that’s often morally repellent yet engaging and occasionally hilarious. In fact, on an aesthetic level, the movie works pretty well for what it’s trying to achieve, which is a slice of life of wild youthful abandon, even if it sometimes seems shapeless and unfocused. However, discerning viewers will be offended and are well advised to steer clear of EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!.
