We’ve got some nostalgic news, Millennials…we’re returning to the world of WISHBONE in a brand new documentary!

The beloved WISHBONE TV series ran from 1995-1997 and followed a Jack Russell Terrier named Wishbone on his many adventures through classic literature. The PBS show encouraged imagination and reading for young viewers, bringing to life everything from Sherlock Holmes to The Odyssey.

The upcoming documentary, titled WHAT’S THE STORY, WISHBONE?, goes behind-the-scenes to share “how the series captured the imagination of audiences — and why it’s influence still resonates decades later. The film offers a uniquely personal perspective on the making of the show,” per Action Figure Insider.

It comes as WISHBONE celebrates its 30th anniversary.

“…I’m excited to pull back the curtain on how this little show became a real cultural phenomenon,” documentary director Joey Stewart said. “I made this film to celebrate its impact and reconnect the audiences who grew up with it in a meaningful way. This film is a personal passion project. Of everything I’ve worked on, WISHBONE is the one that seems to have had the most lasting impact. It’s a love letter to the fans who grew up with the show and still carry it with them.”

Stewart continued, “What always amazed me was just how ambitious it was. We were adapting classic literature — across centuries, genres and worlds — on a television schedule that, in hindsight, feels almost impossible. Through the voices of the writers, directors, producers, and cast, this film explores how it all came together — and how something that felt chaotic at the time ended up meaning so much to an entire generation.”

Larry Brantley, who voiced the beloved pup and produced the documentary, said, “For most of my professional life, I have been asked the question, ‘What was it like working on WISHBONE?’ After 30 years, I can finally say, ‘Watch this film!’ ”

Producer Betty Buckley added, “Producing WISHBONE was such a joy in every way. Revisiting this iconic series and reflecting on the experience that inspired a love of reading in children is something I’m incredibly excited to share with audiences.”

The creatives behind the project just dropped the trailer for WHAT’S THE STORY, WISHBONE? earlier this week.

“The Wishbone documentary I shot & edited it (directed by @joeystewartfilms) will premiere on PBS soon and roll out on digital platforms this summer,” creative Blake Calhoun posted on Instagram. “People Magazine just covered everything including the exclusive trailer release. 🙌🏻🎬”

A post from the Wishbone documentary Instagram page celebrated its summer release, too, and pulled an enthusiastic response from fans.

“My daughter loved to watch the reruns on PBS in the 2000s. We will be watching this together,” one person said. Another added, “I remember WISHBONE I grew up in my younger years. It was one of my favorite shows to watch after school.”

WHAT’S THE STORY, WISHBONE? debuts May 27 through June 9, 2026, on public television stations. It will be available for TVOD/Digital starting June 10.
