A ROYAL AFFAIR

What You Need To Know:

A ROYAL AFFAIR is a Danish historical drama. The story opens in 1766. Princess Caroline, the 16-year-old sister of England’s King George III, marries Christian, the king of Denmark. Despite the birth of a son, their marriage becomes bitter, especially when Christian continues his promiscuous ways. Into the court comes a German physician, Johann Struensee. Johann becomes the king’s physician. Johann’s medical expertise impresses the King and his young Queen. Johann and Christian, with Caroline’s support, begin a series of radical Enlightenment reforms. The big government reforms threaten the aristocracy and the Catholic Church. They also begin to bankrupt Denmark. Imagine that! Making matters worse, Johann and Queen Caroline have begun a secret affair behind the unstable King’s back.

A ROYAL AFFAIR sides with big government reformers. It also attacks Christian faith and morality. Religious faith is depicted as totally superstitious, perhaps evil. A ROYAL AFFAIR is a dry, abhorrent little movie that pagan Marxists, liberals, and leftists will love, but Christians, conservatives, and libertarians will hate. The filmmakers ignore the fact that the big government reforms in A ROYAL AFFAIR bankrupt Denmark.

More Detail:

A ROYAL AFFAIR is a Danish historical drama about an ill-fated attempt by a mad king’s physician in the late 1700s to bring Enlightenment, humanist social policies to that country. The physician gets into trouble because his attempt includes an adulterous affair with the king’s progressive-minded young queen.

The story opens in 1766. Princess Caroline, the 16-year-old sister of King George III of England, anxiously preparing to marry King Christian III of Denmark. Her girlhood fantasies are dashed suddenly when Christian becomes jealous of the attention she receives. Despite the birth of a son, their marriage becomes extremely bitter, especially when Christian continues his promiscuous ways, even under her very nose in one scene.

Into the court comes a German physician named Johann Struensee. Johann gets his position as the king’s physician when two noblemen support his appointment so they can get back into the King’s good graces. Johann and his two benefactors are supporters of the Age of Enlightenment sweeping Europe at the time.

Johann’s medical expertise impresses both the King and his young Queen. Caroline also becomes impressed by Johann’s interest in the Enlightenment. Johann helps King Christian stand up to the court’s aristocratic advisors, including powerful supporters of the Catholic Church.

Johann and Christian, with Caroline’s support, begin a series of radical reforms that threaten this power structure and that attack Christian faith. As with today’s big government, secular programs, the reforms begin to bankrupt the kingdom. Making matters worse, Johann and Caroline have begun a secret affair that threatens to bring their whole world tumbling down.

A ROYAL AFFAIR doesn’t just side with the big government reformers, it also attacks the Christian faith. Religious faith is depicted as totally superstitious and backward, if not evil. The movie also contains some foul language and several sex scenes with brief nudity. Thus, A ROYAL AFFAIR is a dry, abhorrent little movie that Marxists, liberals, and leftists will love, but Christians, conservatives, and libertarians will hate. Ironically, the secular humanist filmmakers behind A ROYAL AFFAIR seem too ignorant to wonder why the Anti-Christian big government programs installed by the king’s physician and his cohorts drove Denmark into bankruptcy and moral degradation. They also fail to question the tyrannical, undemocratic methods employed by these alleged “free thinkers.” No wonder the aristocrats, the military, and the people in the story turn against them so strongly! Sooner or later, big government reformers run out of other people’s money and squander a nation’s prosperity and peace.
