More Detail:
DEMON SLAYER – KIMETSU NO YAIBA: INFINITY CASTLE, Part I of an intended trilogy, is an animated fantasy from Japan about a young member of a corps of demon-fighting martial arts experts who are trapped in the head demon Muzan’s multi-dimensional castle and must fight numerous man-eating vampire demons while searching for Muzan to destroy him and his minions forever. So far, DEMON SLAYER – KIMETSU NO YAIBA: INFINITY CASTLE is the best of the DEMON SLAYER movies. It tells a riveting, action packed story full of tragedy, triumph and redemption, but the frequent martial arts fighting features lots of blood and, though the story takes place in a fantasy world of good versus evil, it has mixed, sometimes vague, references to Japanese gods, occult or supernatural martial arts powers, and the Afterlife.
Muzan is the first and strongest demon in existence, as well as their ruler. Originally, he was a sickly young man born sometime between 800 and 1200 A.D. He was turned into a man-eating vampire monster or “demon” from an experimental treatment to save his life. Since then, he’s dedicated himself to using his blood to turn humans into demons who will slavishly serve him. He hopes that, somewhere down the line, his efforts will create a demon immune to sunlight and Muzan can absorb that power. Muzan and his demons can only be killed by sunlight or by beheading them with a special sword, like the swords that Demon Slaying Corps members train with and carry. “Kimetsu no Yaibi” actually means “demon-killing blade.” However, if Muzan or one of the demons he and his highest level demons create are only wounded, they have the power to regenerate themselves. The demon slayers and the more humanoid-like vampire monsters or demons are trained to be proficient in martial arts techniques and powers. Many of their martial arts powers seem to transcend physical science and thus seem supernatural or mystical. Other man-eating demons are more animalistic or resemble traditional Japanese folklore monsters like Japanese versions of trolls, ogres and similar monsters.
The DEMON SLAYER TV series, movies and comic books, which can be divided into 12 or so story arcs, focus on a teenager named Tanjiro who joins the Demon Slaying Corps after his parents were murdered by Muzan, who then tuned his sister, Nezuko, into a demon. Happily, Nezuko rejected and overcame the Demon King Muzan’s control and now helps the Corps and Tanjiro. As the series and books continue, Tanjiro increases his martial arts power and expertise.
INFINITY CASTLE opens with Muzan escaping to the extradimensional stronghold of his Infinity Castle while he’s at the mansion where the leader of the Corps lives. The leader, Kagaya, had lured Muzan there to kill him with explosives.
As their meeting occurred, Tanjiro, his sister and the rest of the Demon Corps’ top fighters were racing to rescue Kagaya. As a result, they get sucked into Muzan’s stronghold, Infinity Castle. Inside the castle, they get separated and must battle their way through hordes of demons as they search for Muzan.
Meanwhile, Shinburo, a female Demon Slayer, has prepared a series of poisons to kill the second most powerful demon under Muzan, who murdered her big sister. Also, Tanjiro and his friend, Giyu, battle the third most powerful demon under Muzan, Akaza, whose human name was Hakuji. As the battles proceed, flashbacks reveal how Shinburo’s sister was killed and how Muzan turned Hakuji into a demon after Hakuji suffered two great personal tragedies.
The search for Muzan in INFINITY CASTLE is striking and inventive. Back in the real world, the son and daughter of the dead Demon Slaying Corps leader are maping the castle by getting reports from the Corps’ army of trained crows who have flown into the castle.
However, it’s the story of Shinburo and her battle with the second most powerful demon, and the battle against Akaza that are the most exciting and riveting parts of the movie. Also, the tragedy of Shinburo’s sister and the tragedies that befall Akaza’s human side are deeply moving. Even better, the battle against Akaza has a surprising resolution that’s triumphant and redemptive.
DEMON SLAYER: INFINITY CASTLE tells a riveting, action packed story full of tragedy, triumph and redemption. The redemptive conclusion to the battle against Akaza the demon lifts DEMON SLAYER: INFINITY CASTLE above its bloody violence and its references to pagan, occult folklore and mystical martial arts.
