More Detail:
DUMB AND DUMBER chronicles the misadventures of Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas, two losers from Rhode Island who try to return a briefcase. The movie opens as Lloyd chauffeurs Mary to the airport. When she leaves her briefcase, he jumps out of his limo and chases after her, but realizes painfully that her plane has departed as he falls off the ramp. Depressed because she is gone and because he has lost his job, he goes home only to learn that his roommate Harry has lost his job too. Without money and friends, Lloyd and Harry decide to head west for Aspen, sure that Mary will be so grateful for her returned bag that she will introduce them to all her friends. What follows is an adventure like none they and the people whom their stupidity confounds have ever experienced. Along the way of their inane journey, the film makes perfunctory stops at every point of inanity and crude humor imaginable.
What is most disappointing about DUMB AND DUMBER is its lack of self-understanding. Instead of a plot, the movie focuses merely on the moronic behavior of its heros. As a result, their road trip has no merit of its own and serves only as a stage for Daniels and Carrey’s extremely contrived antics. The only story here is that extreme stupidity can happen, and that in itself is hardly entertaining. Just when you think the movie is as dumb as it can get, it gets dumber.
