More Detail:

Not since HEATHERS has a high school movie been so blatantly celebratory and glib about teenage murder. Starring Marilyn Manson’s girlfriend Rose McGowan (and featuring a cameo by the shock rocker himself), JAWBREAKER becomes altogether unredeeming and evil as it explored rich brats who cover up a murder.

McGowan plays Courtney Shane. She along with Julie Freeman (Rebecca Gayheart), Marcie Fox (Julie Benz) and Liz Pur (Charlotte Roldan) rule the school in popularity, looks and attitude. On Liz’s 17th birthday, Courtney, Julie and Marcie rudely wake her up, stuff a jawbreaker in her mouth, put a piece of duct tape over her mouth, tie her up and put her in the trunk of a car. They plan this “kidnapping” as a prank, but when they open the trunk up at school, Liz is dead, asphyxiated on the jawbreaker. Rather than report this accident to authorities, Courtney leads a cover-up of rude denial and callousness.

This cover-up alienates Julie, while involving the school nerd Fern Mayo (Judy Evans Greer) in a makeover. Furthermore, it is discovered that Courtney engages in fornication in Liz’s bed to make it look like Liz was raped and killed. Through dumb luck, Julie finds a way to expose Courtney, ruining the prom but bringing cruel justice down upon the most callous of the wicked, Courtney and Marcie.

Everything about this movie is bad. The acting, the editing, the directing, and writing are all overplayed, trite and rude. Courtney is completely vile, and it seems strange that Fern would let herself be so caught up in this ruse. The image of Liz’s dead body is revisited several times in flashbacks, a very distasteful site indeed. Plus, rude, loveless, vindictive sex is also shown between Courtney and her partner. Throughout, Courtney’s powerlust runs rampant and out of control. When Julie and the spurned Fern get their comeuppance, it is not out of a sense of justice or righting a wrong, but complete vengeance and spitefulness.

Prior to this screening were previews for a whole slew of upcoming teen comedies. All but one seemed stupid, rude and insulting. To all teenagers who would be attracted to this stuff, wake up! You are worth more than what Hollywood is offering. Your mind, body and spirit are beautiful, God given gifts. Your money is also hard-earned. JAWBREAKER is a heart-breaker, mind-breaker and spirit-breaker. There isn’t even any fun music or odd little supporting characters to break the monotonous dread. Teenagers deserve and should demand better.
