LIFE AS WE KNOW IT

"Unplanned Circumstances"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

LIFE AS WE KNOW IT is a cute, funny and heartwarming, but somewhat edgy, romantic comedy. Holly Berenson and Eric Messer are two young professionals who don’t get along, even though their two best friends tried to set them up once on a blind date. One terrible night, their friends die in a car accident, leaving their 2-year-old daughter, Sophie, an orphan. A lawyer tells Holly and Messer that their friends named them both guardians. They decide to raise the child together in their friends’ house, but not as husband and wife. Things go terrible at first, but, as they settle down, Holly and Messer find themselves unexpectedly attracted to one another. Just when it looks like they might even get married, their relationship goes south again. The question then becomes, can Holly and Messer patch things up, or will Holly have to raise Sophie on her own?

Despite some funny, uplifting moments, LIFE AS WE KNOW IT has plenty of PG-13 foul language. There are also some sexual innuendoes, brief marijuana references and a somewhat liberal, nontraditional view of family. MOVIEGUIDE® suggests strong caution for the movie’s problematic content.

Content:

(RoRo, FR, BB, PC, Ho, LLL, V, S, N, A, DD) Strong Romantic, slightly liberal worldview with some strong moral elements, plus, however, a minor politically correct, homosexual subtext involving a same sex couple raising a child; 17 obscenities (including two “f” words), one Jesus profanity, 29 light profanities such as My God and Oh God, and couple changes stinky diaper; brief light comic violence and couple dies in offscreen traffic accident; implied fornication and some light sexual comments; brief upper male nudity; alcohol use; no smoking but a small package of marijuana is found twice and the second time it is baked into brownies; and, nothing else objectionable.

More Detail:

LIFE AS WE KNOW IT is a cute, funny and heartwarming, but somewhat edgy, romantic comedy about family life. The movie’s edgier aspects warrant strong caution for media-wise viewers.

The movie opens with a blind date for the two romantic lead characters, Holly Berenson and Eric Messer. Their two best friends set them up on the blind date, but Holly and Messer mix like oil and water.

Then, in a montage sequence, their friends, Peter and Alison, get married, buy a house and have a daughter, Sophie. Holly and Messer still don’t get along. In fact, they barely tolerate one another for the sake of their respective best friends.

One terrible night, however, their friends die in a car accident, leaving 2-year-old Sophie an orphan. When a lawyer tells Holly and Messer that their friends named both of them guardians, Holly and Messer foolishly decide to raise the child together in their friends’ house as Sophie’s godparents, not as husband and wife.

Things go terrible at first, but, as things settle down, Holly and Messer find themselves unexpectedly attracted to one another. Just when it looks like they might even get married, their relationship goes south again. The question then becomes, can Holly and Messer patch things up, or will Holly have to raise Sophie on her own?

Despite many funny, heartwarming moments, some good writing and appealing performances, there’s a lot of PG-13 foul language in LIFE AS WE KNOW IT. Also, the two leads sleep together one time. Finally, though all of the other friends of Sophie’s mom and dad are married with children, one of the couples includes two homosexual men. Thus, LIFE AS WE KNOW IT has a Romantic, somewhat liberal worldview with a subtext that promotes same-sex marriage and takes a slightly non-traditional attitude toward family. One scene also has brief comic elements involving brownies laced with marijuana.

All in all, therefore, MOVIEGUIDE® suggests strong caution for the movie’s more edgy, lewd and non-traditional elements.
