SMOKIN’ ACES

What You Need To Know:

SMOKIN' ACES is an ultra-violent crime thriller about a Las Vegas magician, Buddy "Aces" Israel, who has been dabbling in gangster plots with the last big Mafia boss. After his gangster career goes south, the magician decides to turn state's evidence for the FBI. Two FBI agents lead a team to pick up Buddy at his secret Lake Tahoe penthouse, but they learn that the Mafia boss and his buddies have put out a million dollar contract on Buddy. Hordes of wild and wooly hitmen show up on at Buddy's location. Tremendous violence ensues.

As a crime thriller, SMOKIN' ACES is not playing with a full deck. The filmmakers settle for violent carnage and R-rated satire over thoughtful suspense and action. A host of star cameos, led by Ben Affleck, divide the viewer's attention. Also, a major plot twist at the end is confusing, poorly done and makes the FBI look evil. The movie's unfocused mayhem is accompanied by more than 220 most strong obscenities and profanities, as well as brief sex content, brief nudity and many references to Buddy's cocaine habit. All in all, the movie's perspective is pretty abhorrent.
