THE BRIDGE is about a married woman who believes she is suffocating in her middle-class life in 1960s Normandy. Despite her loving husband Georges (Gerard Depardieu), Mina is a discontented wife who spends much of her free time at the local cinema with her teenage son, Tommy. During one such matinee, she shares an emotional bond with a stranger seated next to her. She is moved by his soft crying at the conclusion of a romantic movie. She is drawn to him and he quickly seduces her into an adulterous relationship. She learns that the stranger is her husband’s new boss, chief engineer of the bridge under construction in a nearby town. Georges, however, remains devoted and allows his wife to continue the affair in hopes she will tire of it. Consequences of her affair are borne out in the actions of her teenage son, who is deeply hurt by the choices she makes. Ultimately, she concludes that her happiness is more important than her marriage.

THE BRIDGE examines in detail the damage inflicted by adultery, yet offers no concluding moral judgment or criticism. It also contains some foul language, sexual situations and other objectionable content.
