More Detail:

THE MESSENGERS: Awakening is a supernatural drama that follows five individuals as they are chosen to be Messengers in a spiritual battle against Lucifer. Read the overview review for more plot details on the first episode, Awakening.

Awakening is a compelling pilot that sets up promise for the show, but has a few bumps along the way. There’s a great cast, but some of the writing is forced and the audience is filled in on plot details in cheesy ways. Also, aspects of the plot become bizarre, especially in the case of Joshua’s wife who’s impregnated with his fathers child. The characters are interesting, but it’ll take some work to really earn the viewers trust. The show is about faith and a supernatural battle taking place in a theistic and realistic world. Partly inspired by the book of Revelation, it’s worth stating that any take on end times will raise theological debate. MESSENGERS doesn’t seem as preoccupied on making blanket theological statements as it does on exploring the faith of the characters. This is a wise decision and with that perspective, will make the show more entertaining. That said, while we may cheer that the prosperity gospel is seen as deceptive and faith is affirmed, we could very well see some politically correct viewpoints on faith and Christianity in future episodes. There’s also some strong violence, brief foul language and heavy elements, so strong caution is advised.
