PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES takes place in an English country town in the 1800s during a fictional zombie apocalypse, where two wealthy men attract the attention of two sisters trained in martial arts to fend off zombies. Based on Jane Austen’s beloved book, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES is well made despite its absurd twists and has a Christian, moral worldview, but the contemporary author of the spinoff has added some pagan elements and scary zombie violence.

A wealthy gentleman named Mr. Bingley moves to Derbyshire, a country town where a family of five girls lives. When the girl’s mother finds out about Mr. Bingley, she tries to convince her husband the girls must meet him.

Meanwhile, a plague has hit Brittan and led to a zombie apocalypse. Fortunately, the Bennet family girls have been trained in China in the martial arts. So, they’re quite capable of taking care of themselves!

When Mr. Bingley comes to a town dance, he’s introduced to the Bennet girls. Bingley came with one of his friends, Mr. Darcy, who’s supposedly even richer than Mr. Bingley. Immediately, the oldest Bennet, Jane, and Mr. Bingley share a romantic spark, but Mr. Darcy and the second oldest Bennet child, Liz, are at odds. The two manage to offend each other almost instantly.

Not long into the dance there’s a zombie invasion, and Liz shows her martial arts talents to Mr. Darcy, who’s a military captain and also battles the zombies. Surprisingly, the Bennet girls are a great warrior team against the zombies. Their skills impress both men.

Not long after all this, Mr. Bingley’s sister invites Jane to have tea with them. Clever Mrs. Bennet tells Jane she must go on horseback to Mr Bingley’s in order to spend more time with him. However, Jane has to fend off zombies to get to Mr. Bingley, and once she arrives, it’s in question whether she’s been bitten. She has to stay and rest, and Liz comes to check on her, so the two are able to spend time with Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy.

When all the Bennet women come to pick up Jane and Liz, Mrs. Bennet makes Mr. Bingley promise he will throw a ball. Later, the girls decide to walk to the town center to meet the militia. There, Liz meets Mr. Wickham and tries to get him invited to the ball. Tension sparks, and the question becomes, who will Liz pick, Mr. Darcy or Mr. Wickham?

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES is a well-made, entertaining, comical horror movie. The writer intersperses many comical points in between the ludicrous horror of a zombie apocalypse. Of course, the overall storyline itself is Pride And Prejudice, with the added theme of killing zombies. The sets are beautiful and the costuming well done. Though the story’s meant to be a bit absurd, the performances are played realistically.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES has some positive Christian, moral elements, diminished by some pagan elements. The characters go to a church, thinking that this is how the apocalypse will be ended by abstaining from the natural zombie instinct. In addition, there’s a moment of sacrifice in the movie, which is an aspect to Jane Austen’s storyline, where Darcy is shown to be a person with a selfless, noble character.

The biggest caution here is the violence of killing the zombies. In addition, the zombies also look mangled and, of course, zombie-like, which will scare younger teenagers and especially pre-adolescents. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES.
