Truth talk: A lot of you know about my battle with Bipolar Disorder… and if you didn’t, you do now. A common misconception is that it’s a day to day pendulum, but that’s not the case. Sometimes the highs and the lows can last weeks at the time. I’ve been struggling with a low lately. When you’re down, even your favorite things become mundane. Fuses are short, energy is on E, and there’s a constant nagging in your mind. It’s not something you can just snap out of and it’s a real thing. Some of us have brains that need a little extra help balancing. There’s no shame in admitting that. I’ve been fortunate to be in the care of a wonderful team for years now. I have a family that understands my needs and holds me accountable when I’m swinging a little too much in one direction. I know that sleep, diet, exercise, and medication compliance are critical in managing my disorder. When one of those factors gets out of whack, I know what’s coming. The last couple of weeks have come at no surprise, but it doesn’t make it any easier. I’ve been pushing through because my “wise mind” knows this feeling won’t last forever. I know a lot of you will think it’s sad that this is something I deal with, but those of us facing mental health issues don’t need your sympathy, we just need empathy. That’s the most important lesson I’ve learned from my disorder. It’s easy to look at someone’s highlight reel and judge them from the outside. So, let this post be a reminder… judge less. Be kind. You never know the battle someone is facing on the inside. • What do you do to manage depression or bipolar disorder?
