Watch:

What You Need To Know:

KATY PERRY: PART OF ME shows fans of the popstar her life. Katy grew up in a strict Pentecostal family, but she dreamed of singing on stage. She found success with her first hit, “I kissed a girl (and I liked it).” Her parents were initially discouraged by their daughter’s actions, but they continue to support her. Katy Perry has continued to receive remarkable success, even breaking a record for receiving five number one singles on one album. Through the fame, Perry’s marriage fell, but she wisely advises youths to wait on love, telling them it’s “not like the movies.”

KATY PERRY: PART OF ME is well made and filled with vibrant colors and fantastic imagery. The movie’s creativity is fun, but the worldview is troubling. While Perry may be admirable for her work ethic, she often wears suggestive, revealing clothing. Her music is also questionable, containing some lewd and immoral content. However, she’s a quirky, fun character who inspires many youths. Although she’s left her parents’ strict faith, she still claims to believe in God. MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong caution for children and teenagers regarding KATY PERRY: PART OF ME.

More Detail:

Popstar Katy Perry shows fans her life as a pop star in KATY PERRY: A PART OF ME. Decidedly turning away from her parents’ Pentecostal version of Christianity, but rather having a “personal relationship with God,” the movie shows a romantic worldview and the desire for fame.

The documentary begins where Perry begins her shows – in the preparation room. Vibrant and extravagant costumes line the walls, and a makeup artist begins work on Perry’s face. When Perry comes to the stage, the audience screams and goggles at the fantastic, candyland backdrop. The documentary continues to show the different aspects that conglomerate into each show, and then it takes a turn to show Perry’s early life.

Katy Perry grew up in a strictly Pentecostal family, listening only to Christian music and singing in the choir. Katy felt stifled by how conservative her parents were towards her and admittedly “rebelled” in a way. She dreamed of being on stage in front of a large audience but was limited by her parents’ prohibitions. Perry released a gospel album in her teenage years, but it was largely unsuccessful.

After that, she took matters into her own hands and sought publicity with some major record labels. She was adopted by one and performed fairly, but received little success. She was nearly quitting when Capital Records adopted her. At this point, she started with her first hit, “I kissed a girl (and I liked it).” Her parents, especially her mother, were initially discouraged by their daughter’s actions, but they continued to support her.

Katy Perry has continued to receive remarkable success, even breaking a record for receiving five number one singles on one album. However, the documentary also shows how her career has affected her life and relationships. She continually drives herself to exhaustion, and her marriage suffered and fell. Perry comments wisely on love and marriage during the documentary, advising youths to wait on marriage and love, adding that love is “not like the movies.” She also comments about how she won’t have a baby now because mothers have to be grown up to have a child, and she admits she’s still a child. When she does have a child, she really just wants to be a mother to that child.

Perry still claims to believe in God and have a spiritual walk that changes daily, but she admits she doesn’t believe all that her mother does. She doesn’t go into detail with her personal beliefs. She does, however, mouth “Thank You, God,” after one of her concerts. Perry’s music reflects her conflicting beliefs, ranging from sensual fluff to profound looks into her consciousness like “Who Am I Living For?” Despite any glimpses of religion, parents should caution children not to imitate all Perry’s ways. Her incredible work ethic is admirable yet also should be cautioned for its negative relational effects.

The documentary is quite well made and filled with vibrant colors and fantastic imagery. Perry’s concert is full of fun elements including illusionist acts, puppets, and silly characters. The movie’s creativity is fun, but the worldview is troubling. Many young girls are told to follow their dreams no matter the views of their parents. While Perry may be admirable for her work ethic, she’s not the best role model for clothes and fashion. She often wears suggestive and revealing clothing. Her music is also questionable, containing some lewd and immoral content. However, Perry is a quirky and fun character that inspires youth that it’s okay to be different, and she has encouraged many.

Overall, caution is advised (especially for children), but with responsible parental involvement, youths may be encouraged by Perry and some of her music. Parents are encouraged to discuss the worldview ramifications with their children.
