THE INNKEEPERS

What You Need To Know:

THE INNKEEPERS is an unsuccessful, atmospheric horror movie. The thin story concerns a young woman named Claire and a young man named Luke. They are the overnight staff during an allegedly haunted hotel’s final weekend. Claire and Luke are fascinated with the tale of an old woman who committed suicide there years ago. They’re determined to record evidence of supernatural activity by her ghost. As they wander through the hotel, they play repeated pranks on each other. A former actress turned psychic becomes a guest. She believes spirits lurk everywhere because the universe is just interconnected energy fields. An elderly man revisiting the honeymoon suite commits suicide. The discovery of his bloody corpse sends events spiraling out of control.

The movie’s bleak ending tries to make up for the movie’s lack of thrills and goofy pranks, but they still take the edge off the scary parts. The filmmakers should be commended for trying to evoke terror without much graphic violence. However, they still insert too much foul language. THE INNKEEPERS will bore most moviegoers while still offending believers with its abhorrent, occult worldview and New Age view of God’s Creation.

Content:

(OOO, PaPaPa, LLL, VVV, N, AA, M) Atmospheric horror movie with humorous elements is marred by a very strong occult, pagan worldview and a New Age pagan description of creation as “energy” shared by all creatures which also says “spirits” lurk throughout the world; about 21 obscenities (including eight “f” words) and at least 10 profanities; one very gruesome discovery of a suicide victim in a tub with blood everywhere, but otherwise strong scary violence includes ghosts scare people, man runs to safety when elderly ghost approaches him, female lead falls down stairs and bloodies her face after dead man in tub walks up to her from behind after he has already been found dead, spirit of the old lady appears next to the young woman’s bed as she tries to sleep, young female tries to escape the basement but is trapped by a locked door with the woman’s spirit rapidly approaching her, corpse being shown wheeled out of inn; no sexual content; upper male nudity, woman wrapped in towel after shower, and woman runs fearfully in her underwear and a skimpy T-shirt to the hotel’s front desk and winds up being seen by a little boy guest whose mother is offended; young leads get drunk on beer at one point; no smoking or drugs; and, two people try to scare each other with fake scares.

More Detail:

THE INNKEEPERS is an atmospheric horror movie with too many attempts at humor to truly provide scares for the veteran horror audience. It’s also rooted in a strong occult worldview that’s offensive to Christians.

The thin story concerns a young woman named Claire and a man named Luke who are the overnight staff during the final weekend of an allegedly haunted hotel. Claire and Luke are fascinated with the tale of an old woman who committed suicide there years ago and are determined to see and record evidence of supernatural activity by her spirit. As they wander through the halls and basement, they play repeated pranks on each other faking the spirit’s activity.

The addition of a former actress turned psychic as a guest brings the events into a more serious light. The psychic believes that spirits lurk everywhere in the world and that the universe is just interconnected energy fields.

An elderly man who says he wants to revisit his honeymoon suite from decades before winds up committing suicide. The discovery of his bloody corpse in the bathtub sends events spiraling out of control in the last few minutes.

[SPOILERS FOLLOW] The psychic tells the Claire to flee for her life. That is exactly what Luke does, but Claire foolishly enters the basement one last time. There, she’s pushed down the stairs by the now-zombie elderly man. Now with a bloodied face, Claire runs toward a locked door. As she is stricken with an asthmatic panic attack, the old woman’s spirit races toward her. The camera cuts away, and Claire is next seen dead on a gurney. [SPOILERS END]

The movie’s bleak ending tries to make up for the fact that the movie’s lack of real thrills and too many goofy pranks between the clerks takes the edge off the movie being truly scary. Writer-director Ti West should be commended on an artistic level for trying to evoke terror without graphic violence. However, he still inserts too much foul language. Also, THE INNKEEPERS will bore most moviegoers while still offending Christian and Jewish believers with its occult worldview and New Age pagan view of God’s Creation.
