THE MAN FROM ALDERSGATE

What You Need To Know:

Roger Nelson is a talented actor whose first stage appearance was with his classmate Ann-Margaret. Rather than pursue the fame and glitter of the mass media of entertainment, he has dedicated himself to communicating Christian truth through several different one-man stage plays. THE MAN FROM ALDERSGATE about John Wesley is one of those productions which is available on videotape. At a stopover in his busy schedule of preaching and teaching, the elderly John Wesley tells the story of his life. He started preaching the truth about God’s Grace in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and people started coming to Christ in droves. The Church kicked him out, so he rode over 250,000 miles on horseback to bring spiritual renewal to 18th Century England. He preached over 42,000 sermons and wrote more than 200 books.

Watching this production is Gospel-affirming, entertaining and enlightening. As I was reviewing this video, my younger children said, oh this is going to be boring. Then they sat down and were captivated, which is quite a commendation indeed. It’s hard to imagine anyone could sit through this production and not accept Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior

Content:

(CCC, BBB) Very strong Christian worldview; nothing objectionable.

More Detail:

Roger Nelson is a talented actor whose first stage appearance was with his classmate Ann-Margaret. Rather than pursue the fame and glitter of the mass media of entertainment, he has dedicated himself to communicating Christian truth through several different one-man stage plays.

THE MAN FROM ALDERSGATE about John Wesley is one of those productions which is available on videotape. Mr. Nelson has presented this one-act play on six continents as well as Stratford-on-Avon in London, England, the birthplace of William Shakespeare’s art.

As I was reviewing this video, my younger children said, oh this is going to be boring. Then, they sat down and were captivated, which is quite a commendation indeed.

At a stopover in his busy schedule of preaching and teaching, the elderly John Wesley tells the story of his life. He grew up in a Christian family and his father was a preacher. He became a preacher, but after years of toiling he realized that he did not know Christ. His description of his conversion in this play sounds more like the complete victory of God’s Grace rather than the Arminianism which the denominations he spawned are known for in their theology. When he found out that it was simply God’s Grace in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, he started preaching the truth and people started coming to Christ in droves. The Church kicked him out, so he rode over 250,000 miles on horseback to bring spiritual renewal to 18th Century England. Founder of the Methodist Church, Wesley fought for prison reform, child labor laws, medical care units, milk dispensaries, orphanages, shelters for battered women, and the establishment of schools. He preached over 42,000 sermons and wrote more than 200 books.

Watching this production is Gospel-affirming, entertaining and enlightening. It’s hard to imagine anyone could sit through this production and not accept Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior.
