Top 10 Movies That Honor Mom

Movies That Honor Mom

By Dr. Ted Baehr, Publisher

In past years, we’ve talked about how few movies there are that feature strong, loving mothers. Too often, motherhood is mocked in movies (BAD MOMS), or they’re simply portrayed as mean (MOANA in the beginning), or even as the villains (AMERICAN BEAUTY, SOUTH PARK and SERIAL MOM).

However, we’ve seen a growing trend of positive portrayals of mothers in Hollywood movies. CINDERELLA tells the story of a mother passing on her values to her daughter in a powerful way. HIDDEN FIGURES shows hard-working mothers dedicated to serving their country in NASA’s computer department, but also present for their children. ARRIVAL shows a skilled linguist who saves humanity deciding that being a mother is the greatest thing she can do. These are just a few terrific movies that didn’t even make the Top 10 List that promote the incredible role mothers play in our lives.

Below is a list of Moviguide®’s Best Movies for Mother’s Day…

BREAKTHROUGH (2019)

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
BREAKTHROUGH is a must-see, entertaining, powerful, convicting, heartrending story about the real-life incident of a boy who fell through some ice and had no pulse for a longer period than any doctor thought possible when he then miraculously revived. Each character, believers and unbelievers, undergoes a tremendous journey in BREAKTHROUGH, an inspiring movie that will make you laugh and cry.

LITTLE WOMEN (2019)

Quality:
****
Content:
+2 Moderately questionable elements.
LITTLE WOMEN (2019) is the most gorgeous, historically accurate big screen version of the famous book by Louisa May Alcott that’s been made several times in movies and for television. Better yet, LITTLE WOMEN has no foul language, no sex, no nudity, no violence but is a delightful character study with very strong Christian content about a family dealing with real issues during the Civil War. Along with the 2019 version, there were productions of LITTLE WOMEN released in 1994, 2018 and 2018 (PBS).

MARS NEEDS MOMS

Quality:
****
Content:
+2 Moderately questionable elements.
MARS NEEDS MOMS is an animated, comical science fiction adventure about a 9-year-old boy who must rescue his mother from an autocratic all-female Martian police state that has taken her captive. MARS NEEDS MOMS is a very entertaining, exciting, funny, touching, brilliantly structured movie, which extols the traditional idea that every child needs a mother and a father.

THE LION KING (2019)

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
THE LION KING returns to the big screen in a live-action remake of the popular 1994 cartoon, as Simba the lion has to learn to grow up and save the ones he loves. THE LION KING is well made and has a strong moral, redemptive worldview extolling sacrifice and acting honorably, but it does have some pagan mysticism and scary scenes of lions fighting each other that merit caution for younger children.

INCREDIBLES 2

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
In INCREDIBLES 2, the sequel to Pixar and Disney’s classic animated movie, Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, and their children spring into action once again when a supervillain hypnotizes innocent civilians to harm others. INCREDIBLES 2 is another fun, exciting, family-friendly superhero movie with lots of humor and heart, but it contains a couple light expletives and some scary elements requiring caution for younger children.

MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN

Quality:
****
Content:
+4 Biblical, usually Christian, worldview, with no questionable elements whatsoever.
MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN is a heartrending, faith-affirming drama about the true story of a 12-year-old girl suffering from a very serious medical disorder. The cast and the filmmakers do a beautiful job making this story come alive.

DOLPHIN REEF

Quality:
****
Content:
+3 Some minor questionable elements. (Media-wisdom is suggested to discuss.)
DOLPHIN REEF follows the story of a young dolphin named Echo who’s in the process of trying to decide if he should grow up or put off his responsibility a little while longer. DOLPHIN REEF is a beautiful documentary that offers gorgeous, vibrant and lively images of life underwater and a strong moral worldview showing that mothers will do anything to protect their young.

THE PARENT TRAP

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
In the remake of THE PARENT TRAP, Little Hallie Parker and Annie James (both played by newcomer, Lindsay Lohan) meet at camp and slowly discover that they are identical twins, separated at birth. Their job is to trick their parents into getting back together. Despite some pranks and a few exclamations, this movie is very moral, with a strong Christian worldview that extols family values.

WONDER

Quality:
****
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
WONDER is a family drama about Auggie, a young boy with a facial deformity who’s entering school for the first time after being homeschooled by his mother. The movie looks at Auggie’s first year in school from his perspective and the perspective of those around him. WONDER is a terrifically empathetic, uplifting movie that will bring tears of joy, but there’s brief, mostly light foul language.

THE BLIND SIDE

Quality:
****
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
THE BLIND SIDE is a compelling, feel great drama that tells the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless young black teenager who is welcomed into a caring Christian family. Though there are unneccessary elements requiring caution, this wonderful drama is a faith filled, truly inspiring movie with overt Christian values.
