New In Theaters October 18, 2019: Several New Releases, Not Many with Worthwhile Elements

MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL

Quality:
****
Content:
-2 Extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.
In MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL, Maleficent is at war with the humans when Philip proposes to Aurora but Philip’s mother is rude to her, so Maleficent gets angry at the mother and curses Philip’s father. MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL is very entertaining, with incredible visuals and costuming, and strong positive Christian, moral elements, but it also has some magic and mysticism set in a fairy tale world and may be very scary for children.

BY THE GRACE OF GOD

Quality:
****
Content:
-3 Excessive sex, violence, immorality, and/or worldview problems. (Sometimes excessive content such as violence is in otherwise redemptive movies.)
BY THE GRACE OF GOD, a French movie, follows three grown men, decades after they were sexually harassed by a priest turned Cardinal in the Catholic Church, who band together to expose the truth. BY THE GRACE OF GOD is well made and maintains a predominant Christian, biblical worldview, but there are also elements where Scripture is taken out of context, and Christians in leadership abuse young children. Because of these elements, some graphic descriptions of molestation and rape, talk of suicide, and other unsavory elements, BY THE GRACE OF GOD make BY THE GRACE OF GOD unacceptable.

CYRANO, MY LOVE

Quality:
***
Content:
-2 Extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.
CYRANO, MY LOVE is a French period drama about how Edmond Rostand wrote his famous, beloved play, CYRANO DE BERGERAC, which shows life imitating art and vice versa. CYRANO, MY LOVE is enjoyable and delightful, but the set design could have been more convincing. CYRANO, MY LOVE has a light moral worldview but is marred by brief nudity in one scene and some sensuality, so extreme caution is advised.

JOJO RABBIT

Quality:
****
Content:
-2 Extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.
JOJO RABBIT is a quirky satire about a young boy’s growth from being a member of the Hitler Youth during World War II to being a better person when he finds out his mother is hiding a teenage Jewish girl in their attic. Despite the satire, JOJO RABBIT becomes a very moving experience as the boy interacts with the Jewish girl and rediscovers his humanity. However, the movie has lots of PG-13 foul language and some violence, so MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Quality:
****
Content:
-4 Intentional blasphemy, evil, gross immorality, and/or worldview problems. (To be avoided)
THE LIGHTHOUSE tells a dark, eerie story about two lighthouse keepers caught between reality and delusion in the 1890s. THE LIGHTHOUSE caters to a very specific, limited audience and has lots of strong foul language, violence and lewd content.

ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP

Quality:
****
Content:
-2 Extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.
ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP picks up 10 years after the first horror comedy, with another wild adventure battling the undead as three friends try to find and save the youngest girl of the group after she runs away with a new boyfriend. ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP provides another round of traveling comic mayhem, combined with entertaining character interactions, a strong moral worldview mixed with some positive Christian references, but ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP also contains strong foul language and extreme violence, a casual premarital sex, and a comical reference to marijuana use.
