More Detail:

LOST LEGACY RECLAIMED: THE HERITAGE PROJECT is an eight-part documentary series on early church history. THE SCILLITAN MARTYRS tells the story of 12 Christian martyrs in Second Century Carthage in 180 A.D. This North African city is one of the most important Roman cities of the time. Romans like to think of themselves as open to all belief systems. They don’t mind if anyone adds to their list of gods who they worship. They do not even mind if the people worshipping do not believe. In fact, most scholars of the era are openly skeptical of all religions. They claim to be an open and civilized society. Given these factors, one wonders why this group of Christians are singled out and killed for their beliefs.

The new Roman Emperor Commodus is in part responsible for the brutal treatment of Christians. Unlike his father Marcus Aurelius, he is erratic. Christians are a problem to Rome for three reasons. They regard any other god as false or demonic, they will not burn incense to the Emperor’s “birth spirit,” and they meet in private. Romans heavily discourage any private gatherings without Roman officials present. The 12 martyrs refuse to worship any other god and and deem it idolatry. When faced with death, they consistently and peacefully choose death.

THE SCILLITAN MARTYRS is an interesting presentation on the history of Christianity. The visuals resemble a docudrama style and keep the viewer interested. It is a marvel to consider how these martyrs suffered cruel brutality yet thanked the Lord when they’re sentenced to death. This type of spirituality is of the highest caliber, as it is against human nature to accept death and violence. THE SCILITAN MARTYRS is recommended for older children and adults who can understand their faith, without fear or fanaticism.
