More Detail:

THE REAL RIGHT STUFF is an awe-inspiring, faith-filled documentary on Disney+ about the seven American astronauts who paved the way for space travel in the 1960s during the Mercury Project. THE REAL RIGHT STUFF is a superb, inspirational documentary for older children and adults with a strong Pro-American, Christian, moral, patriotic worldview.

In the late 1950s, the U.S.A was at the height of the Cold War with the Soviet Union and this included high tensions during the so called “Space Race,” after the launch of the Sputnik satellite by Communist Russia. Determined to beat the Russians to successful space travel, the U.S.A. searched for able-bodied men to train to go literally around the Earth in orbit. After careful consideration of scuba divers, military men and civilians with like backgrounds, seven men eventually were selected in the early 1960s for the Mercury Project.

These seven men were John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Virgil Grissom, Waler Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. They never backed down from a challenge whether it was G-force testing, medical tests or otherwise. They were determined to do their job.

Although they were merely volunteers, they became celebrities instantly, which also meant that their wives and families shared the spotlight. In between rigorous training, there were both highs and lows with the media constantly parading their every move and, of course, the looming pressure to beat the Russians to the moon.

John Glenn, one of the seven men, was the most articulate of his peers, and the media took a liking to him because for his emphasis on faith and family values. However, most of the other men also were men of faith whose wives and children supported them on their quest to win the space race.

In May 1961, Alan Sheppard entered orbit and came home to a re-energized zeal for space innovation. Gus Grissom then orbited the Earth, followed by Glenn the following February. The movie then shares quick snippets of the remaining Mercury astronauts who paved the way for America’s eventual landing on the moon in July 1969.

THE REAL RIGHT STUFF launches (pun intended) on Disney+ in conjunction with the original Disney+ series’ finale of THE RIGHT STUFF, based on the popular 1979 book by Tom Wolfe. The documentary has a stellar soundtrack that matches the on-screen action to the letter. The filmmaking quality is top notch. The filmmakers brilliantly splice together archival footage, radio interviews and talking heads of the people who were involved with the Mercury project in the heyday of the space race.

THE REAL RIGHT STUFF is a superb, brilliantly structured documentary. It has a strong moral, patriotic worldview. Americans rally together in their quest to launch into outer space and thwart the scientific intentions of Communist Russia. The movie also displays a strong sense of respect toward servicemen, including the three presidents involved in America’s space program as well as the astronauts. Happily, the filmmakers stress the valuable role that Christian faith played in many of the astronauts’ personal lives. THE REAL RIGHT STUFF also includes positive references to honoring one’s wife, family, Heaven, and being God-fearing.
