How Colton Dixon is Trusting God’s Plan: ‘I Owe Everything that I Have Done to God’

Colton Dixon rocketed into the limelight after his run on Season 11 of AMERICAN IDOL.

After a successful launch into the world of music, Dixon soon earned two Dove Awards for “Rock/Contemporary Album” and “Recorded Music Packaging” and received a pair of K-Love Fan Award nominations in the category of “Male Artist of the Year.”

However, Dixon’s career in music was not always successful. In 2017, Dixon lost his record label, and his faith was tested.

“The lies of the enemy told me I was not good enough for a record label, but a comment from my wife, Annie, made all the difference and turned everything around,” Dixon shared on the Charisma Podcast Network.

Dixon opened up about how he and his wife relied on their faith in Jesus Christ, prayer, and God’s Word on “Living in the Light with Dr. Kristi Lemley.”

“I was dropped by my label, which is the blunt way to put it, and as a musician, it kind of feels like you lose your job,” Dixon confessed. “When your identity is wrapped up in career, and in the security of a record label, it comes as a very big blow. It’s funny when you put out a record called ‘Identity,’ and then you have to actually practice what you preach later, it’s like, ‘Oh, I was doing what I said you shouldn’t do.’

“It was a tough season,” Dixon continued. “I’m just being transparent with you. It was hard. There’s a lot of figuring out what the future was going to look like, what it was not going to look like all the questions from, ‘God, is this still what you want me to do?’ It’s still what I want to do, but I’m trying really hard to just lay that down and say ‘your will be done here.'”

Dixon said that he relied on his faith and the support of his wife during the challenging time.

“I’m thankful for my wife. She said something that was just really going to change the game for both her and I. She said, ‘Man, what if we’re looking at this all wrong, what if this isn’t a setback? But what if this is God just setting you up for the next chapter?’ and I was like that would make a really good message,” Dixon recalled.

Dixon said that the time of discouragement led to a greater appreciation of how God blesses his children every day.

“It’s honestly where the song “Miracles” came out of,” Dixon explained. It’s not always the big things. The big things are great, and I’m so thankful for the big moments and big miracles in my life, but when you get still in the presence of God, you see all the little things.”

He added: “Just little things that people say, ‘well, oh, it’s coincidence’ or ‘I made that happen,’ if I’ve learned one thing in my life, it’s [that] I owe everything that I have done to God. Anything good comes from God. And so it was in that season where we were kind of forced to slow down, I saw all those little things and just went ‘God, you are so in control, and you are so working all things together for the good of those who love you, and are called according to your purpose, and I fit in that category. God, I believe that you have a plan and purpose for me. And that’s what I’m gonna put my faith and trust in, it’s not a paycheck from a record label. You’re my provider, so whatever that looks like, I’m on board, and I’m all yours.'”

Even as Dixon and his wife waited, their prayers and faithfulness to trust God’s plan for their lives was not immediately answered.

“I would love to say, immediately, it was like, boom record label called, but that wasn’t the case, Dixon said. “It was several months, and it was even after that, it was like several months of finalizing a deal and all of those technical business things, but God is good, and his word has never returned void for me.”

Dixon encouraged others to trust that God’s plan is better than any plan a human being could think up.

“That may be something hard to hear if you’re in the middle of it right now. But just let me tell you, stick with it. Just don’t give up,” Dixon said. “Don’t give up. God opens doors that no man can shut. Sometimes. Maybe you’re just not looking at the right door. Or maybe you’re on the wrong doorstep. That doesn’t mean give up. It’s like, ‘hey, just keep searching, keep diving into the word, keep praying, and I promise it will come to fruition, it always does.”
