THE OLD GUARD Sequel Finds Its New Director as Charlize Theron Confirms Return

By Movieguide® Staff

As Netflix prepares for THE OLD GUARD 2, starring Charlize Theron, Victoria Mahoney is set to direct.

THE OLD GUARD became one of the streamer’s top movies and was also nominated at the Movieguide® Awards for Top Ten Movies for Mature Audiences.

Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE OLD GUARD follows a group of independent soldiers who can self-heal from any injury, which makes them significantly older than they appear. For obvious reasons, the soldiers try to stay under the radar while they travel the world helping other people. After a setup, the group learns that many people are hot on their trail, looking to exploit their abilities for personal gain. Andy (short for Andromeda) is the group’s ringleader. She tries to protect her team at all costs, but will her old age and the conflict take its toll?

THE OLD GUARD is one of Netflix’s more engaging original movies. The characters have compelling backstories. Also, the movie has a strong moral worldview with positive Christian elements. One of the good guys is a Christian who affirms her belief in God, even when someone says otherwise. Also, one character’s jaded attitude causes her to lose faith in humanity, but the Christian character seems to give her hope. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for THE OLD GUARD because of lots of foul language, two homosexual characters and intense, bloody action violence.

The first movie was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who said that she will step down as director for the sequel but will still produce.

“I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre,” Prince-Bythewood said. “I have decided not to direct the sequel, but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter.”

Mahoney, who has worked on STARS WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, is excited to take on the new position.

“Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard,” Mahoney said. “I must’ve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement–being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences. Warmly tipping my hat to the world Gina, Charlize, Rucka, Fernández, Skydance, Netflix, Marc Evans Productions, Denver & Delilah Films and the entire Team daringly put forward.”

“We are beyond thrilled that Vic is joining The Old Guard team,” added Theron, and the movie’s other stars. “Her passion for these characters and her ambitious vision for the movie overwhelmed us all. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with her.”

Movieguide® previously reported of the sequel:

Actress Charlize Theron recently confirmed to Variety that she would reprise her role as Andy sequel to her 2020 action-thriller THE OLD GUARD.

Theron, 45, revealed that the script for the new movie is complete and that filming will begin next year.

Movieguide® recognized THE OLD GUARD as one of the Top Ten Movies for Mature Audiences in 2020 due to its redemptive elements such as faith, friendship, and evil being brought to justice.
