Former THE MIGHTY DUCKS’ Star Shaun Weiss Celebrates 2 Years of Sobriety

By Movieguide® Staff

Former child star Shaun Weiss posted a shocking throwback picture to celebrate two years of sobriety after battling methamphetamine addiction.

Weiss, best known for his role in THE MIGHTY DUCKS, is unrecognizable in the first photo, which shows how his addiction negatively affected his body and life. Weiss revealed that he lost weight, had missing teeth, and was arrested multiple times.

However, the second photo showed Weiss’ healthy transformation.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with 12 amazing steps,” he captioned the photo.

Movieguide® previously reported on Weiss’ journey to sobriety, including his graduation from a drug court program in California:

The former actor’s graduation marks a victory in a long battle of addiction The Yuba County DA’s Office honored Weiss for his persistence and effort in the recovery process.

“Shaun demonstrated perseverance during his recovery complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic He had to move treatment and transitional living programs on several occasions He underwent dental reconstructive surgery, and had a close family member suffer a serious accident during his treatment,” the agency wrote in a Facebook post.

“Shaun regained employment and has been traveling across the country making guest appearances and signing autographs He received tremendous support from friends and fans of the character, Goldberg, he played in the 1992 hit ‘The Mighty Ducks,'” the post continues.

Weiss’ rock bottom came when he broke into a Christian man’s home in 2020.

The man, Lou Binninger, called the break in a “God incident,” as Binninger had the resources to assist Weiss’ recovery.

Binninger worked with the Church of Glad Tidings and their outreach programs.

According to the site, Binninger facilitates classes at a local jail.

Class topics include computer keyboard training; substance abuse; rehabilitation; life, parenting, relationship and job skills; health; relapse prevention; child support and child protective service problems; recovery; mental and sexual abuse; anger management; community resources and the supernatural.

“There’s help. So if he’s ready, we can help him,” Binninger said.

Weiss has had many helping hands on his road to recovery, including friend and fellow actor Drew Gallagher.

Gallagher set up a GoFundMe page for Weiss, writing:

BTW Weiss couldn’t be more thankful to the entire Yuba County Jail staff including the medical ward for their excellent decency and kindness His court assessor Ryan, as well as his defense lawyer and probation officers have been remarkable in supporting Shauns recovery Thank you A long road ahead but the journey to health has begun.
