Journalist Lara Logan Condemns Social Media for Their Exploitation of Children

By Movieguide® Contributor

Journalist Lara Logan announced her exit from Twitter, Instagram and Facebook because of the inappropriate and disturbing content featured on the sites.

“I am leaving Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. I cannot in good conscience contribute to platforms who glorify & enrich themselves at the expense of children who they knowingly exploit,” Logan tweeted. “Discovering recently that animals are sexually abused/exploited along with children was a shock.

“I had no idea such a depraved ideology was being pushed on this scale or the insidious ways the worst of humanity is normalized, promoted & quietly glorified by the same platforms who censor free speech from truckers, doctors, naturalists, vaccine injured & so on,” she continued. “It’s wrong.”

Logan also posted a video to Twitter, which highlights a YouTuber named Shane Dawson, notorious for creating content that featured racism and pedophilia.

“For now I will be on Gettr, Locals & any platform that prioritizes the rights of children, animals, free speech & basic human decency,” Logan tweeted.

Movieguide® previously reported on the EARN IT Act, a bill that would work to crack down on inappropriate content online:

The Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies (EARN IT) Act was advanced unanimously through the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2020 but didn’t get a floor vote.

The National Center on Sexual Exploitation praised the EARN IT Act as the “best piece of tech accountability.”

“With child sexual abuse material (CSAM) exploding on the internet, tech companies should eradicate it from their platforms. But tech companies currently have no incentive to prevent or eliminate CSAM. The EARN IT Act is the best piece of tech accountability legislation to ensure tech companies do the right thing,” said Dawn Hawkins, CEO of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.

“We are pleased that this updated EARN IT Act addresses others’ concerns about encryption. But most importantly, this bill will ensure that tech companies finally address, prevent, and end this horrific criminality. Tech has the capability of doing so but needs Congress to hold it accountable,” Hawkins said.
