Tasha Layton: Early Church Experience Changed ‘Trajectory’ of Her Life
By Movieguide® Contributor
Christian singer Tasha Layton is opening up about how her faith helped her through a dark moment in her life.
“I grew up in the church, but I really started to get excited about God and my faith when I was at a particular church in my teen years,” Layton shared with Woman’s World. “I joined the youth worship team. I went on mission trips. I did all kinds of stuff, but then I was really wounded by a church leader.”
This hurt led her to explore other religions, visiting a Buddhist meditation camp, a synagogue and a mosque, but she didn’t “find what I was looking for.”
“In all those other religions, I didn’t find the peace that passes understanding,” she said. “I didn’t find the power to transform. That power was what I really needed. I needed the power of healing.”
Layton eventually went back to church and “hated it,” but one special service changed her life.
“The pastor said one day, ‘Hey, if you want a touch from God, why don’t you come up at the end of service? We want to pray for you.’ I left three hours later,” Layton said.
“I’d always make a joke that they had to replace the carpet where I was laying because of all my snot,” she laughed.
She continued, “That was a turning point for me. The people in that church just loved me. They didn’t judge me and were there for me consistently. That, coupled with that altar moment experience with God, really, really changed the trajectory of my life.”
Today, Layton is one of the biggest names in Christian music.
Her latest single, “Lay It Down,” celebrates how Layton found peace after surrendering her burdens to God.
“There’s a lot we’re called to lay down in scripture: our burdens, our pride, our crowns, even laying down to rest; laying down is a theme in the Bible,” Layton said of the track. “When we lay down what we’re carrying, our hands are open…Sometimes, when you’re living through the burdens in life, laying it down doesn’t mean that circumstances change. What it does mean, however, is that you are trusting God. He offers peace, hope and strength along the way as you live from a place of trust and rest instead of striving.”
Layton is also getting ready to hit the road on the “Look What You’ve Done” Tour, which is the first tour she’s headlined.
“I’m so beyond grateful for this opportunity – to share my music with you all and to meet you in person,” she wrote on Instagram.
Movieguide® previously reported on Layton’s single “Into the Sea”:
Christian artist Tasha Layton recently revealed the deep meaning behind the lyrics of her song, “Into the Sea (It’s Gonna Be Ok).”
“I think the line, ‘it’s gonna be ok,’ is something that a lot of people need to hear,” Layton said.
The musician shared with the Christian Beat that she and the other songwriters pulled inspiration from memories of hard circumstances to create the lyrics.
“I hope when people hear this song, they are able to access the most honest thoughts and emotions they’re feeling right now and truly hand them over to God,” she said. “I hope they sense God assuring them that, no matter what they are facing, it’s going to be ok.”
