John Stamos Says Bob Saget ‘Was Addicted to Laughs’ In New Memoir

By Movieguide® Contributor

John Stamos’ new memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me,” looks back on his acting career, taking special note of the lessons he learned through his friendship with Bob Saget.

While the two were dear friends by the end of FULL HOUSE, differences in their approach to acting drove a wedge in their relationship when they first met.

Stamos told Good Morning America that he and Saget “did not get along” due to their “very different processes.”

“Bob was addicted to laughs,” Stamos said. “It was a drug for him. He had to make people laugh.” Stamos came from the world of soaps and sitcoms where drama was key.

Over the eight seasons of FULL HOUSE, however, the two became close friends, staying connected through Saget’s death in 2022. In fact, Saget’s death urged Statmos to write about his life, Good Housekeeping reports.

Throughout the memoir, Statmos beautifully portrays his friendship with Saget.

“[Saget’s] wife called me the other day crying,” he said. “She said, ‘You know, if you didn’t know Bob and you read this book, you know the real Bob. You did a beautiful job representing him.’”

“The important thing is, I talk about [Saget] a lot because if I don’t he’s complaining somewhere,” Stamos joked.

Elsewhere in the memoir, the actor reflects on his relationship with his parents, emphasizing how they guided his life and taught him invaluable lessons. His dad taught him to treat every person with respect and dignity.

“He treated the bus boy the same way he treated the best customer,” Stamos said of his father. “He was always good to people. I try to do that.”

His mother shared her wisdom and love through handwritten notes, something Stamos has returned to in all seasons of life.

He called these notes “the road map that I need to follow throughout this book.”

Stamos’ memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me,” is now available.

John Stamos recently put rumors of a FULL HOUSE reboot to rest, explaining that there’s “a piece missing” without the late Bob Saget.

“It’s just not the same without him,” Stamos said. “There’s something missing, there’s a piece missing. We’re doing a lot of tributes. I did that Netflix tribute [DIRTY DADDY: THE BOB SAGET TRIBUTE], which was beautiful, I thought.”

The actor continued, “Every chance I get, I talk about him. If we’re real quiet, we could hear him complaining right now that I don’t talk about him enough. We’ll continue to do tributes to him, but I don’t know about a FULL HOUSE one, though.”

Stamos and Saget starred as brothers on FULL HOUSE, and got very close during their time on the show.
