Cory Asbury Explores God’s Love: ‘Grace Still Abounds’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian artist Cory Asbury opened up about how he came to understand God’s deep love for him despite his sins.

“There’s a God who’s real, wants to be close to me, wants to have a relationship with me, knows all the bad stuff I did and still wants me,” Asbury said in an interview with TBN.

“I also had to wrestle with, ‘Okay. I’ve encountered you. Why do I keep messing up?’ And it’s like, you know, in the book of Romans, Paul talks about ‘I [Paul] keep doing the thing that I don’t want to do,’ referring to basically sin,” he said. “‘I want to be holy, I really love God, but I keep screwing up. What’s wrong?’ And he basically says grace still abounds.”

Asbury explained that becoming a father helped him better understand God’s love.

“It wasn’t until we had our first kid, Gabriel, that it really began to make sense to me—the Father, heart of God,” he said.

He told Relevant Magazine, “When I held him for the first time, it’s like everything changed. You look into their eyes for the first time and you feel this ability and this capacity to love that you’ve probably never experienced before, even with your wife. It’s a different feeling.”

He explores God’s love further in his hit song “Reckless Love.”

“When I use the phrase, ‘the reckless love of God,’ I’m not saying that God Himself is reckless. I am, however, saying that the way He loves, is in many regards, quite so,” Asbury said in a Facebook post.

“His love leaves the ninety-nine to find the one every time. To many practical adults, that’s a foolish concept,” he wrote. “‘But what if he loses the ninety-nine in search of the one?’ What if? Finding that one lost sheep is, and will always be, supremely important.”

“His love isn’t cautious. No, it’s a love that sent His Own Son to die a gruesome death on a cross,” Asbury continued to write. “The recklessness of His love is seen most clearly in this – it gets Him hurt over and over. Make no mistake, our sin pains His heart.”
“To get personal, His love saw me, a broken-down kid with regret as deep as the ocean; My innocence and youth poured out like water,” he concluded. “Yet, He saw fit to use me for His kingdom because He’s just that kind. I didn’t earn it and I sure as heck don’t deserve it, but He’s just that good. Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Asbury:

Christian singer Cory Asbury recently shared the emotional meaning behind his song “My Inheritance.”

“I felt like, growing up as a kid, my dad was tough on me, but thankfully, our relationship has grown over the years, and we found a lot of healing,” he said in an Instagram video. “When I was a teenager, especially, it was difficult, and this song is just kind of reckoning with that fact and going, ‘You know, I didn’t get what I thought I was going to get out of that relationship…’”

Asbury also said his dad “brought me home my first guitar and that was a massive gift. That’s what started the songwriting journey I’ve been on and it’s a place that I’ve gained so much ground and wisdom and healing…I wouldn’t have gotten that if not for my dad bringing home my guitar.”

“Life always does look different than we thought it would, but God works all things for good,” Asbury concluded. “It’s one of those situations where it didn’t go the way I wanted it to, but it made me the man I am today. That’s my inheritance. I guess that’s good enough.”
