Tim Allen discussed what fans can expect from TOY STORY 5 and why he was so excited to return for another movie in the beloved franchise.

“I just finished another five-hour session in L.A. yesterday; flew here late last night,” Allen told Entertainment Tonight. “So, [TOY STORY 5] is a story about Jesse. It’s very, very clever, which — I was reticent with some of the people that are detractors [asking], ‘Do we need another TOY STORY? Is four “To infinity and beyond” the hard line when Buzz and Woody had to say goodbye to each other?’ [The doubters] tore us up. Now we’re back for a good reason. It’s very, very clever and it’s worth it.”

TOY STORY 5 was first announced last August. Since then, fans have learned that the movie will see the toys facing the increasingly difficult job of competing against technology. The first promotional image from the movie even features Bonnie looking at a tablet, as Woody and the gang look at her in horror.

“[Through these characters] we’re learned all about loyalty and belonging and friendship. These characters have given us a unique perspective on growing up and navigating life and in all the TOY STORY films, above all else, the job of the toys has been to be there for their kids,” writer and director Andrew Stanton told the audience at Disney’s D23 conference. “With TOY STORY 5, the toy’s jobs get exponentially harder when our toy crew goes head-to-head with what kids are obsessed with today: Electronics.”

Allen has also previously shared how the upcoming movie will shift the focus away from Buzz and Woody onto Jessie, though the two icons of the franchise will remain relevant throughout.

“I can tell you that [TOY STORY 5] is a lot about Jessie,” Allen told WIVB 4 radio in April. “Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyear. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”

The TOY STORY franchise is one of the most family-friendly, morally grounded stories Disney has produced. All four movies have been recognized at the Movieguide® Awards, with TOY STORY 3 being recognized as the Best Movie for Families in 2010.

While some fans may be nervous for the next movie in the franchise after the moral failings of LIGHTYEAR, all of the discussion about the upcoming movie so far suggests Disney has learned its lesson, and TOY STORY 5 will return to the ground the movies are known for. Especially given Allen’s excitement for the movie, this seems to be the case.
