Erin Krakow, who plays Elizabeth in WHEN CALLS THE HEART, says the new season features “renewed hope” and “meaningful” stories.
Season 12 ended with Little Jack’s health scare and an urgent trip to Cape Fullerton.
“The end of season 12 was pretty fraught for Elizabeth, and it was a really dramatic way to end the season,” Krakow recently told PEOPLE. “But luckily, we start season 13 with some very renewed hope, and we’re seeing Elizabeth, Nathan, Little Jack, and Allie preparing for their triumphant return to Hope Valley.”
One of her favorite aspects of this season is the “meaningful” historical moments that the show emphasizes.

“Not to get into too much of the history of it, but at the time, in 1921, diabetes was a very, very scary diagnosis. Luckily, insulin was created in that same year — we were able to have this magical treatment — and getting to include some of that history, I think, is very meaningful. It’s fun to get to include some real-life history in the stories we’re telling.”
Hope Valley gets some upgrades with its first electric company, a stoplight and a motion picture theater.
“We’re inching our way into the future,” Krakow said. “But I think one of the things that people really like about watching WHEN CALLS THE HEART is it’s a rural community that, even though the world is continuing to progress in time and development, Hope Valley is still staying true to its roots.”
Krakow previously told Swooon that Elizabeth’s beau, “Nathan, is always just trying to remind Elizabeth that she doesn’t have to go it alone. Elizabeth has been a single mom for many years, and I mean, obviously, she has a lot of help from her friends in Hope Valley. But Nathan is quick to remind her that he can be her rock. He’s going to be there for not just Elizabeth, but Little Jack as well.”
He’s doing everything to prove that in Season 13.
Krakow told Us that the couple “get romantic together” in Season 13. “They get silly together. There are some beautiful, beautiful moments between them.”
She told Us she doesn’t know if her character and Nathan will ever have a baby.
“Never say never. I mean, who knows? I [am] constantly surprised and delighted by what the writers come up with for us,” Krakow said. “Let’s take it one step at a time here. Let’s get them engaged first, and then we’ll see.”
Krakow also hinted that fans will be satisfied with the romance in Season 13, so an engagement is likely on the menu!
