Comedian Jim Breuer recently opened up about how God saved his marriage during a turbulent time.
“Long story short, my wife and I, we’re having a tough time in the marriage,” the former SNL cast member said on an episode of his “Funny How God Works” podcast. “There’s this little post office in Chester, New Jersey, and I pull down this side street, I pull around the corner, I park and I have it out with God. And I’m sobbing at this point, too.”
Breuer said he argued with God, telling Him he had stepped away from a more lucrative career in the entertainment industry to focus on his family.
“If you exist, and I know you do — I know you do — I need you right now,” the comedian recalled saying to God. “I’m begging you, please. You have to come and intervene in this now. Please help save this marriage, please.”
A few days later, Breuer came home to find his wife crying. She told him she had been invited to pray with a couple who “prayed that I find goodness, and may God find love through me.”
The couple began attending church together, and their marriage was strengthened.
Breuer spoke further about his marriage in an interview with Westworld, explaining that he feared his career in the entertainment industry would negatively impact his relationship with his wife.
“I broke down and prayed to God that my marriage would be protected; because I truly believed that my marriage was going to fail. Because when you get to Hollywood and you get on TV, it’s like winning a lottery ticket,” he explained. “And not only did you win a lottery ticket for hundreds of thousands of dollars, you also have women that come out of the woodwork. I was on the cover of TV Guide and USA Today. It was the whole sex, drugs and rock-and-roll fame thing, and I knew I was going to doom my marriage.”
Breuer continued, “I didn’t expect to be fired from that show [BUDDIES] after I prayed that. But after I prayed to make my marriage stronger, the next day it was like, ‘Um, you’re fired, Jim.’ I was devastated, but I was like, wow, I expected an answer but not that one.”
His faith saw him through his wife’s cancer diagnosis and allowed him to reflect on the beauty of their marriage.
“You know how many people never had the relationship I had and still have?” he said in an episode of “The Breuerverse Podcast.” “Do you know how many incredible, life-saving, emotional and deeply saving moments I’ve had with my wife Dee?”
He added, “I will never be angry with God. I can’t believe the beauty that surrounds me, I can’t believe the beauty that’s being given to me.”
Breuer’s faith has seen him through ups and downs, strengthening his relationship with his wife over the years.
