Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed that James Gunn will direct a sequel SUPERMAN, highlighting his approval of the first steps taken by the new DC architect.

“Three years ago, I hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to reimagine and unify the creative direction of DC under one leadership team, by breathing new life and excitement into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world,” Zaslav said shortly after SUPERMAN hit theaters. “James and Peter’s commitment to honoring the legacy of the DC Universe while forging something new and enthralling is inspiring.”

“Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films SUPERGIRL and CLAYFACE in theaters and the series LANTERNS on HBO Max, all part of a bold 10-year plan,” Zaslav added. “The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”

SUPERMAN has been a smash hit in theaters, grossing over $500 million at the worldwide box office after being in theaters for less than once month. This success proves that the superhero genre is not dead and the revival of the DC universe may have a chance at success.

While some studios would try to recreate the success of SUPERMAN by delivering a story that feels the same time after time, Gunn has been adamant that the new DC universe will allow its creatives to run free and impose their own styles on the stories they tell.

“CLAYFACE is a totally different thing,” Gunn said about the upcoming movie. “Although it’s in the same universe it’s a complete horror film, and that’s one of the things we want to do. There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like SUPERMAN. The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it… We don’t want people to get bored.”

As for Gunn’s newly announced sequel to SUPERMAN, it remains unclear if it will serve as a standalone movie or add new aspects to the Superman story. Zaslav added to the mystery as he called it the “next movie in the Super-family,” rather than calling it a direct sequel.

Whatever the case, it is clear that the DC Universe is in good hands with Gunn at the helm. Not only is he a veteran of the superhero genre — he directed all three movies in the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY series — but he is also planning ahead, so the DC cinematic universe can tell a cohesive story.
