Korn’s Brian “Head” Welch recently shared the special meaning behind his tattoo of Matthew 11:28.

“I didn’t know what it meant,” Welch said of his scripture tattoo, representing the verse — “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

He continued, “I [knew] I needed rest for my soul, for my emotions, for my mind. I started seeing that scripture everywhere. People started giving me the scripture…everybody was telling me, ‘That’s God telling you that’s your verse.’”

“It tripped me out that God was real…and it was really cool,” Welch said. “And I got, like, instantly addicted to that,” adding, “I traded [addiction] for the meaning of life and what God is.”

Welch recently spoke about his decision to rejoin Korn in 2013. He previously left the band to focus on overcoming his substance abuse issues, as well as his newfound relationship with Christ.

“I’ve checked and double-checked and confirmed and quadruple-confirmed that I’m supposed to be there,” he told Church Leaders. “So I don’t care what anybody says. God just puts His hand on it, and I just see Him all the time. So that’s all I’m focused on.”

Welch continued, “[God] was showing me, ‘Don’t be afraid to be a light in the dark.’ He never meant for me to never go back [to Korn]. He just meant it wasn’t the right time.”

During a recent appearance on the STAND UP DUDE podcast, the rock star spoke about his faith journey.

“When I came to the place where I was ready to open up my heart to God, I didn’t necessarily know it as opening my heart, but I was begging for help because I was in such a dark place where I wanted my life to be over,” Welch explained. “And so I got to that place where I was, like, ‘Please, help me.’ And that opened my heart a little bit.”

He continued, “Once I started going to church, learning what the Bible was saying, that’s when I found out that God is love. It says God actually is love. Not that just God loves us, that He is love. So His very nature is love…And meeting God and learning that God is love, it started to fill that place, the empty place in me that the drugs and the alcohol were trying to fill. And so it was like — sometimes I describe it as the best high I ever felt. It was God’s love entering, when I opened my heart. And so it’s done spiritually.”

Welch’s faith journey is an inspiration to others who might be struggling with substance addiction or other challenges, and a reminder of the strength of God’s love.
