Bear Bailey covered Brandon Lake and Jelly Roll’s “Hard Fought Hallelujah” on STAR SEARCH, and judge Jelly Roll got emotional.
As Bailey sang, Jelly Roll threw up his hands and sang along. Jelly Roll even shut his eyes, hands lifted, praising God. By the end of the song, both of them were in tears.
“I prayed this morning, I said, ‘God, give me an opportunity to talk about you,'” Jelly said when it came time for critique. “Night one was great, but I didn’t get to my purpose yet, you called me here to talk about you,” he said of the previous night’s taping.
He told Bailey his performance was powerful: “And what I just seen was a room full of people that might not have ever felt it before, but that was the Holy Spirit God. Let me tell you something about the Holy Spirit God, he don’t care anything about your past, he doesn’t care what you been through, he doesn’t care about your drug addiction. He is your father.”

Like Jelly Roll, Bailey has had a hard past, likes to wear black jackets and has face tattoos.
“He is here so you can stand here and sing his name on the biggest streaming service in the world on night two Star Search live on Netflix,” Jelly Roll continued. “Can I get an amen?” He added, “I know Brandon Lake’s crying somewhere right now.”
After the performance, Jelly Roll used the opportunity to share the Gospel.
Jelly rated him a top score of 5, as did Sarah Michelle Gellar. He got a 4 from Chrissy Teigen and a 4.5 viewer score, which puts him in the next round that will air Tuesday and Wednesday next week at 9 p.m. ET, on Netflix, Country Chord reported.
Jelly Roll’s life has been filled with redemption. He was in and out of prison as a young man and was a drug addict. He found music and then God and eventually turned his life around, K-Love reported.
Bailey’s story is similar — he wrote about his addictions in his song, “A Place We Can Go.”
In June, he shared in a social media post, “For so long, I ran from Jesus. I thought because of my past — the choices I made, the pain I carried, and the life I lived — that I was too far gone. But even in my running, He never left me. He was right there the whole time, waiting patiently for my ‘yes.’”
“… I’m proof that no matter how far you think you’ve gone, you’re never out of His reach. He loves you more than you’ll ever understand, and He can do it for you too. Here’s to healing, surrender, and living life to the fullest. ”
These men are strong for everything they’ve been through. They’re a living testimony of God’s goodness.
