One of BOSTON BLUE’s creators is opening up about the decision to recast Sean Reagan in the BLUE BLOODS spin-off.

“We wanted a slightly different version of Sean,” Brandon Margolis told TV Insider. “We wanted a character that feels familiar, an actor that does resemble the character that we watched grow up. But as you saw in the pilot, he has made some life changes and having joined the police force, he is really picking up that family mantle.”

Andrew Terraciano originally played Sean in BLUE BLOODS, with Mika Amonsen taking over the role in BOSTON BLUE.

In an interview with Variety, Margolis explained, “We love Andrew and the work he did over the years on BLUE BLOODS. Really, it came down to we’re telling a new chapter in both of their lives. It’s not just Sean who has joined the family business as it were and is turning over this new leaf, but it’s also now Danny Reagan is the father [of] a cop, which he’s never been before.”

He called it “an organic opportunity to bring in a new performance with a new energy, to help dramatize that change.”

“It is the same character, it’s the same relationship, but it’s also completely different,” Margolis continued. “We love what Mika has brought to Sean, this vulnerability, yet this desire to prove himself. It’s just been great to watch it come to life.”

The change is paying off; BOSTON BLUE is already a hit with fans and critics, scoring a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Anthony Hemingway, the pilot episode’s director, told Deadline that BOSTON BLUE “speaks to the meaning of things that I love to do. They really found the heartbeat inside of the badge and in honoring that, they definitely kept the themes of family, specifically a law enforcement family and community. So I read the script, immediately, got excited, went in, had a meeting, and, you know, the rest is history.”

“Also, CBS really backed us up, trusted us. They believed in what [show creators Margolis and Brandon Sonnier] wrote and they believed in my vision to expand the legacy of BLUE BLOODS, while telling a fresh, human perspective of Boston. That kind of trust and support is very rare in today’s system. I think overall what it speaks to its relationships, and that’s something that I foster.”

While BLUE BLOODS fans might have been disappointed about Sean’s recasting, it looks like Amonsen is a perfect fit for the new stories being told on BOSTON BLUE.
