While celebrating her eighth anniversary of going sober, Jessica Simpson shared how substance abuse destroyed her life — and how giving up drinking has given her new purpose.

“8 years ago today I made the choice to confront, to confess and to let go of the self sabotaging parts of my life that I was choosing,” Simpson wrote in a celebratory Instagram post. “Making that decision allowed me to fully live in the pursuit of God’s purpose for my life. Alcohol silences my intuition, blocked my dreams and chased my circulating fears of complacency.”

“Today I am clear. Today I am driven by faith,” Simpson continued. “Both fear and faith are something that we feel and may not see, I’m so happy I chose faith over fear. It was not in the fight that I found my strength, it was in the surrender.”

Simpson previously opened up about her sobriety journey, sharing how alcohol impacted her mental health and caused her to question every decision. Rather than allow her life to continue down that path – and ultimately become derailed by drinking – she chose a better life for herself, free from the debilitating effects of alcohol.

“Around 2016, ‘17, I was writing out here in Los Angeles with some of the biggest hitmakers. I have songs from those times that I never released because they just didn’t feel like me,” Simpson told The Cut in February. “Every time I would write, I was a little afraid of myself. It was almost too much, especially because I was drinking at the time.”

“I overthought it when I drank. Making this record wasn’t about having a hit. It was just about having a vibe,” she added. “There’s really not a lot of that in Los Angeles right now. It’s formulaic. I wanted to break that mold for myself personally. I don’t care if anything’s a hit. I’m not with a record label. I don’t expect it to even be on the radio.”

Meanwhile, as Simpson has lived into the sober life, she has found purpose through her faith, something that she has relied on and shared about during the highs and lows of the past years.

“I know people are struggling with fear, anxiety and also with sorrowful loss,” Simpson wrote in 2020 as the world was facing the uncertainty of the pandemic. “My faith in God, knowing that with Him all things are possible, has been my strength when I feel overwhelmed. Psalm 34 says, ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit…’ I urge everyone to cause yourself to let go, be silent with listening ears toward God.”

As Simpson has learned to live life without alcohol, it is amazing to see her live out her faith and serve as an inspiration for her fans who are struggling with the fear of giving up drinking themselves. Praise the Lord for Simpson’s many years of sobriety.
