Disney officially cast Rapunzel and Flynn Rider in the upcoming live-action TANGLED!

“The studio has chosen rising Australian actress Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, star of Disney Channel’s musical ZOMBIES franchise, for the respective parts of Rapunzel, the curious and plucky would-be princess with magical hair, and Flynn Rider, the cocky outlaw thief who helps her escape her tower prison,” The Hollywood Reporter announced

The parts were previously played by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi in the popular animated 2010 movie, which Movieguide® reviewed positively, pointing out its “redemptive worldview” and themes of “sacrifice, reunion and restoration.”

Michael Gracey, whose previous credits include THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and BETTER MAN, will serve as director, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (DO REVENGE, THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER) on board to write the script.

No other casting decisions have been announced, but Deadline reported that “Kathryn Hahn is in talks with Disney to play Mother Gothel,” the movie’s antagonist. Scarlett Johansson has also been rumored to be in the running for the part.

Croft and Manheim might have won the roles, but the pair had some stiff competition.

Supermodel Gigi Hadid revealed to Vogue that she auditioned for Rapunzel, saying she was “really proud” of the acting scene she performed but was a bit more unsure when it came to the singing portion of the audition.

“I knew they were going to go with a real singer,” she joked.

QUEEN CHARLOTTE star Corey Mylchreest told Seventeen his audition to play Flynn went similarly.

“I think I can say this now because I don’t think it’s happening anymore, but I auditioned for TANGLED,” he told the magazine. “We don’t have the footage anymore. I deleted it and then I burnt it and then I burnt the phone that I filmed on. And then I burnt the room that I did it in. And then I burnt myself… No, it wasn’t very good. They then told me that they wanted someone with singing experience.”

Disney has been trying to get a live-action version of TANGLED off the ground for awhile now, and the project has faced some bumps in the road.

Last year, The Hollywood Reporter revealed the movie had “been put on pause, according to studio insiders,” following the live-action SNOW WHITE’s box office failure.

With this new casting announcement, it looks like Disney is going full-steam ahead with their live-action production of TANGLED!
