Mark Harmon is returning to the NCISverse in a somewhat unexpected way.

“Legends on legends on legends,” an Instagram post from the NCISverse’s official page announced. “Mark Harmon and Leon Carroll Jr. grace the ‘NCIS: Partners & Probies’ podcast tomorrow. We can’t wait for you to see what’s in store…”

Harmon and Carroll Jr., a retired NCIS special agent, co-authored Ghosts of Sicily: The True Story of the Naval Intelligence Agents Who Courted the Mob to Fight Nazis in America and the Battlefields of Italy.

“The history of World War II has always been fascinating to me, and there have been many books written,” Harmon said of the book. “The Office of Naval Intelligence/ONI played a huge part in the invasion and new details uncovered a riveting, complex story. All records were burned after WWII. Why? Read Ghosts of Sicily and find out.”

Harmon and Carroll Jr. previously worked together on Ghosts of Honolulu: A Japanese Spy, A Japanese American Spy Hunter, and the Untold Story of Pearl Harbor and Ghosts of Panama: A Strongman Out of Control, A Murdered Marine, and the Special Agents Caught in the Middle of an Invasion.

Carroll Jr. added, “When I joined NIS in 1980, I knew little of its remarkable history. This book adds another chapter to the ONI/NIS/NCIS legacy, previously unearthed by the Ghosts of Honolulu and Ghosts of Panama. Once again, I feel honored to showcase the ingenuity of Naval Intelligence officers, in this case, teaming with notorious mob figures during WWII in the Ghosts of Sicily.”

In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon discussed how the books came to be.

“In the very beginning, I was asked if I was interested in doing a book on the TV show, and I had said no,” he explained. “When I first joined the show, part of what they sold me on was that this was all going to be based on real cases. But pretty soon, it settles into murder-a-week because that’s television, right? The idea to do this book in the first place was: If we can tell the real history of this agency, then I’m interested, and I’m interested if Leon Carroll — whom I met 20 years ago as a technical advisor on the show — is with me on this. That’s what we did in the first book, and we jumped off with a World War II story and the early formation of what became NIS.”

Ghosts of Sicily is now available for purchase.
