Amazon Announces Its Next Video Game-to-Movie Adaptation
By Movieguide® Contributor
Amazon MGM Studios announced that it is working on a new series based on the “Mass Effect” video game franchise.
Amazon first expressed interest in working within the “Mass Effect” world in 2021, however, this is the first update since that announcement. Daniel Casey — who previously worked on F9: THE FAST SAGA and 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE — will write and executive produce the show. Karim Zreik, Ari Arad and Michael Gamble are also named as executive producers.
“Mass Effect” was first released in 2007. It follows humans in the future after they discovered the ability to communicate with aliens. Though this has allowed for rapid advancements in technology, it also comes with danger, and humanity has become a target of a race of aliens known as Reapers who pose an existential threat.
To fight this new enemy, an elite set of soldiers are outfitted with cutting edge technology. The main character, Commander Shepherd, is part of this team and in the games, players get to follow him on his adventures.
Four “Mass Effect” games have been released, with the most recent, “Mass Effect: Andromeda” coming out in 2017. It is unclear if the series will follow any of the games storylines or if it will introduce a new story that simply takes place in the “Mass Effect” universe.
The creation of this series comes as the entertainment industry turns to video games as their new cash cow. Since the success of THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, the number of video game adaptations has seen a stark rise and have found widespread success.
