Christian singer Brandon Lake says he wants God to be his “first response” and not his “last resort.”

Lake recently appeared on Russell Brand’s podcast and shared his thoughts on ministry and putting God first. Lake posted snippets from his conversation with Brand on Instagram, writing, “Loved getting to break bread with my brother, @russellbrand!! Got to glean from his wisdom, and share some things I’ve learned along the way too. Honored to be on the pod!”

“I’ve had to realize I still, after all these years, I have to recognize when I’m not putting God first and I’m not going to Him most,” he explained. “Instead of a last resort, I want Him to be my first response.”

Lake also shared some wisdom about the power of ministry.

“This is my favorite quote I’ve heard from my dad,” he shared. “He said, ‘Our primary call isn’t to ministry. It’s to intimacy.’ Ministry flows out of a place of intimacy.”

Intimacy in ministry is something Lake still upholds today, even as his career as a top-selling Christian artist continues to grow. He still serves as worship pastor at his hometown church in South Carolina.

“I believe when you take care of God’s church, He’s going to take care of you,” Lake told Relevant Magazine. “I want to stay planted. Planted things grow. That’s really important for me and my family. I want to go to church with my kids. I want them to see me in the church, and run around the halls, and it feel like a second home to them.”

Lake has recently released new music, including an EP containing multiple versions of his latest single “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” from demos to acoustic and live versions of the song.

“This song is about the battles we face, the grit throughout the fight for faith and the praise that comes after,” he said in a statement about the song. “I hope it resonates deeply with everyone.”
