Brandon Lake took to Instagram to share the beginning of a new song he wrote with country star Lainey Wilson that highlights the real personality of Jesus, rather than the misconstrued version of Jesus many people think of.

“Been loving this new one I wrote with @laineywilson @emilyweisband @lukerobert after talking about people’s experience getting taught a difference Jesus than one we know now 🙏🏼🤠 ‘The Jesus I Know Now,’” Lake shared on Instagram.

The lyrics he shared points listeners to the Jesus revealed by the Bible, rather than the hateful, judgmental, disapproving God that comes to mind for many people when they think of the Lord.

“I was told He was angry / Didn’t like the music up too loud / I was told He would save me / If I showed up to church and I shut my mouth / If I smoke, If I drank, if I cussed / I’d think I was on the long black train to hell / yeah I thought I knew Him / Till I met Him for myself,” Lake sings in the teaser video. “But the Jesus I know now / Ain’t shaking a fist, ain’t raising a proud / Ain’t running away from a party crowd / I found a friend / Who hands with the misfits, less-thans, / Forgives and forgives again / CAn’t believe I was missing out / On the Jesus I know now.”

While Lake grew up as a pastor’s kid and has always followed the Lord, he understands that culture often portrays and twists the Lord to make Him seem like a fun-killing villain rather than a loving father. However, this view of Jesus is completely false – something fully on display through the parable of the prodigal son. While leaving the Lord and coming back to Him is not a part of Lake’s testimony, he still sees abundant grace in his story simply because he was born into a Christian family.

“I always felt like, man, I don’t have a testimony, until I realized, I don’t know, you could probably argue who has been shown more grace: the person who fell away that God brought back or the person that God has kept and protected, somehow,” Lake said earlier this year. “And I’ve had my moments, trust me, but I’ve definitely been on a path to where I’ve tried to be as faithful as I can. And I’ve had a lot of help from friends and pastors as well.”

While we do not know when Lake will release the entirety of “The Jesus I Know Now,” the song is sure to encourage all its listeners as it reminds us of the truth of Jesus’ character.
