Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have announced a celebration of the 25th anniversary of CHICKEN RUN with a theatrical re-release.

“Hatch a plan to see CHICKEN RUN, returning to theaters after 25 years, November 9 & 12,” DreamWorks Animation shared on X.

According to a press release from Universal Pictures, the film “opens with plucky heroine Ginger (Absolutely Fabulous’ Julia Sawalha) doing her best to escape the dire confines of the Tweedy Chicken Farm, though her attempts to flee all come to naught. Her yearning for freedom takes on new urgency, however, after the cruel Mrs. Tweedy (Oscar® nominee Miranda Richardson) decides to phase out her egg operation in favor of making meat pies. The move spells certain doom for Ginger and the other members of her flock.

“It’s just then that an unlikely hero appears in the form of Rocky the Flying Rooster (Oscar® winner Mel Gibson),” Universal continued. “The American daredevil seems perfectly poised to teach Ginger and friends how to take to the skies, but there’s just one problem: Rocky’s aerial skills aren’t quite as impressive as they’re made out to be. With no other choice, the resourceful birds are forced to use their wits to avoid winding up on a dinner plate—if they’re lucky, they might even manage to find happiness in greener pastures far away.”

CHICKEN RUN garnered over $100 million in North America and over $225 million globally. One critic from the Chicago Sun Times, Robert Ebert, gave praise to the film when he said it was a “magical new animated film that looks and sounds like no other … this is a movie that uses animals as surrogates for our hopes and fears, and as the chickens run through one failed escape attempt after another, the charm of the movie wins us over.”

According to the Movieguide® review, “CHICKEN RUN is a brilliantly crafted, funny movie filled with moral elements and witty spoofs. In the tradition of the TOY STORY movies, this movie is equally enjoyable (if not more so) for old as it is for young. Its clever dialogue and exquisite, laborious and beautiful Claymation will amaze the entire family.”

CHICKEN RUN would go on to win several awards, including Movieguide® Awards and Critics’ Choice Award for Best Animated Feature. The film also received a “pair of BAFTA Award nominations: as producers, Lord, Park and David Sproxton were nominated for the 2001 Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film, while Paddy Eason, Mark Nelmes, and Dave Alex Riddett earned a nomination for Best Achievement in Special Visual Effects.”

The sequel, CHICKEN RUN: DAWN OF THE NUGGET, came nearly 20 years after the original movie.
