Christian Comedian Deep Dives Into Jesus’ Humor
By Movieguide® Contributor
Clean comedian and pastor Jason Earls is sharing the importance of pairing humor and faith.
“There’s a lot of humor in the Bible,” he said during an episode of “The Candace Cameron Bure” podcast. “There’s a lot of humor that Christ used.”
Earls explained that there are many verses in the Bible that are funny, but sometimes the humor doesn’t translate to today.
“When Jesus says it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of God…in that culture, that was hilarious,” the comedian said. “[But] when we read that passage, we get really serious.”
Earls continued, “It’s hilarious, but we can’t even fathom that because…we’re so serious.”
“I do feel that there’s a lot of things that, as Christians, as the church, we’re not comfortable talking about them, or we feel like we’re going to get in trouble for sharing them,” he said. “I believe with biblical integrity and honoring Christ, you can address some of these things that may be looked at as non-family-friendly and still be right.”
Earls concluded, “I just want to see the church experience the type of laughs that [a comedy show] has.”
According to his website, Earls is a comedian who “doesn’t live to make you laugh; he makes you laugh to help you live.”
“Jason is a nontoxic comic: You can trust him to deliver without the offensive turn or twist,” his website continued. “Step into a room where Jason commands a stage, and you will certainly experience something special — a refreshing brand of humor that really does help you live.”
The comedian has earned lots of praise for his work as a clean comedian.
Pure Flix praised his “blend of physical comedy and storytelling [that] will keep you laughing all night long,” while Woman’s Day shouted out the “lively energy that instantly captivates his listeners.”
Movieguide® previously reported on another comedian who honors God through humor:
Christian comedian Nazareth shared his journey from tax accountant to Christian comedian, adding that making people laugh is his way of glorifying God…
After a week, the pastor at the church he was attending approached him about doing a comedy show. Nazareth was resistant, wondering how he could honor God through comedy.
“He goes, ‘God created humor,’” Nazareth recalled. “‘Satan perverted it. You do it for Him.’ And that was the big break for me.”
He continued, “I felt the Lord saying, ‘You do this now for me. Your mission is to encourage people, lift them up and bring them to know me through your comedy.’”
“A lot of people call me ‘The Billy Graham of Comedy,’” Nazareth joked. “I love to bring people, make them laugh for an hour and a half, but at the end give them the same hope that was given to me. And the only hope that I can give to people is through a relationship with Jesus Christ.”
