Danny Gokey on ‘Learning How to Hear the Voice of God’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Danny Gokey is sharing his tips for Christians who want to deepen their relationship with God.
“You can be a believer and believe in His cross but not have an intimacy,” he said in response to an Instagram Q&A respondent, who asked, “I’ve been a Christian all my life but no relationship w/Jesus. How do I start?”
Gokey shared, “One of the things I’ve been doing is learning how to hear the voice of God. Be still. Begin to read the word of God…begin to try to experience Jesus…begin to just listen to spontaneous thoughts.”
“A lot of times, God will speak to us through spontaneous thoughts, and as you learn to develop His voice…there’s an intimacy that can develop by stilling yourself, reading His word and imagining Him,” he concluded.
Gokey frequently shares his faith through his music and interviews.
“Music is worship,” he told ISSUU, adding that his faith has been “instrumental” in his life.
For example, “[‘Good, Good Father’] allowed me to have a different thought than the one I was having and feeling. I took my mind and eyes off myself and put them somewhere else—on the Father. That’s what I love about music,” he explained.
He has also discussed what it’s like to be a Christian in the music industry, telling Billboard, “We’re always going to be judged before we’re known, but the goal is to reach beyond that and write music about hope and entertainment — that’s what I do.”
“If [being branded] as a Christian artist is affecting me negatively, then no. But to some people of the faith, it really means a lot to them for me to carry that label,” he continued. “One of my favorite characters in the Bible is named Paul. He said, ‘[I have] become all things to all people.’ And I love that thought.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Gokey’s thoughts on the importance of humility before God:
Danny Gokey is emphasizing the importance of humility and honesty as we seek God’s grace.
“The Bible explains a way to get more grace, and it also explains how you can lose grace on your life. Now, what is grace?” he said in a recent Instagram video. “Grace is God’s ability working through you to do what you can’t do in your own strength. Let’s see what the Bible says about getting grace and losing grace.”
Gokey cited James 4:6:
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
“Pride makes you have less grace. Humility draws grace from the Father God to you,” Gokey said. “How do we know if someone is prideful or someone has humility? Honesty is the key trait of someone who is humble.”
He continued, “The honest person doesn’t make excuses for his bad behavior. People lie to get this, they rebel because they don’t want to do this or that…but an honest person says, ‘I did this wrong because the problem is with me. Not with anyone else. I can’t blame people around me.’ But the Bible says that honest person, that humble person, gets more grace.”
