Do We Need to Worry About AI’s Rapid Advancements?

By Movieguide® Contributor

If Bill Gates is concerned about AI’s rapid advancements, should all of us be?

In a recent interview with talk show host Oprah Winfrey, Gates described AI as the “biggest technical advancement in my lifetime.”

“This is the first technology that is happening faster than even the insiders expected,” he said. “I have significant fears about the risks.”

He also believes it’s important to have government regulations so that AI doesn’t destroy the economy.

“Gates isn’t the only tech notable who thinks government regulation will be needed to mitigate the risks of fast-developing systems. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, speaking with Winfrey in that same special, also noted that ‘there’s been a pretty steep rate of improvement’ in AI systems,” CNET reported. “His suggestion is that AI makers will need to work with the government ‘to start figuring out how to do safety testing of these systems…like we do for aircraft or new medicines or things like that.'”

X owner Elon Musk has also voiced his concerns, as Movieguide® previously reported:

“I was one of the principal co-founders of Open AI. In fact, I named it,” Musk said.

The entrepreneur started the company with his friend Larry Page but grew “increasingly concerned that Larry was not sufficiently concerned with AI safety.”

“At one point he did call me a ‘specieist,’ I guess correctly labelled.” Musk explained. “I’m a specieist in favor of humans instead of machines.”

He fears that AI will one day take over, and humans will lose their working value because AI can do a “better” job. Musk’s former partner was okay with that.

“Larry’s view is — if I’m not misspeaking — is that ultimately we will all upload our minds to the computer, and everyone will just be robots,” Musk explained.

As AI continues to advance, positive and negative developments will come along, and as Christians, we must use discernment about how we implement them into our lives.

We don’t need to fear these technological advancements, though, because we know that God is always in control. Hebrews 13:8 reminds us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,” and Jesus Himself tells us that He is “with you always, to the very end of the age.”
