Emile Hirsch told Movieguide® all about the best things from his new movie, BAU: ARTIST AT WAR.

“For me, it was always a story about love and hope and beauty and the light triumphing over the forces of darkness,” Hirsch told Movieguide® last week. “The character that I portrayed, Joseph Bau, he was a wonderful person who used his resiliency and his sense of humor to get him through the Holocaust. And in the process helped free 1100 Jews from the concentration camps through his artistic talents used in the art of forgery and, and really, became, you know, a legend.”

“To play a part where the sense of humor was so integral to the character was a new challenge for me,” he explained. “I feel like I’ve played a lot of different types of dramatic roles, but this is one of the first roles where it was all about, first and foremost, can you be fun? So some of my, some of my most arduous and taxing and inspiring, invigorating conversations with the director and with the writers were always like, is this as funny as it can be?”

Part of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads, “BAU: ARTIST AT WAR is a moving depiction of the incredible true story of Joseph and Rebecca Bau…Lead actors Emile Hirsch and Inbar Lavi, deliver incredible, heartfelt performances as the two leads. What makes the movie so extraordinary is a script that includes the pain and suffering but punctuates it with real humor and heartfelt romance.”

The element of Bau’s story that stood out to Hirsch the most was that Bau was very strong and maintained hope and humor in the darkest of times.

“I think for me that was super impressive because we’ve all been in situations that are trying and to maintain your sense of self and composure to the point where you can still have a sense of humor, even amidst the absolute bleakest, darkest circumstances that we can imagine,” he said.

“And there’s a scene by a fence with a young boy in the movie, which is a very, it’s a very powerful scene because it really shows the kind of person that Joseph was, helping this young boy who wants to end his own life,” the INTO THE WILD star explained. “And it’s up to Joseph to give him, to give him hope…to help inspire him, to turn him around. And that was something…I was like, wow, this, this dude is special.”

BAU: ARTIST AT WAR came out Sept. 26 and is playing in theaters across America.
